Dulwich Hamlet 3-0 Canvey Island

By Liam Hickey

Dulwich got their season off to a perfect start with a clinical victory over Canvey Island

Despite missing Albert Jarrett through suspension and Jacob Erskine through injury, The Hamlet were far too strong for their visitors.

This was an impressive opening day victory with 5 players signed during the summer in the starting line up.

It was only the 3rd minute when Dulwich took the lead. A long ball was clipped over the top by Ashley Carew which visiting keeper Jake Larkins hesitated to come for and Calum Willock nipped in to round him and finish.

Dulwich were producing some neat and incisive football with Ashley Carew & Danny Waldren linking well, Nyren Clunis keeping his marker busy on the left and Damian Scannell linking play well.

However, Canvey Island were a threat and Matt Drage had to intercept a pass looking to release Tuohy, Ethan Pinnock then had to time his tackle perfectly to thwart Tuohy and then Adeniji was denied by Phil Wilson as he raced through on goal.

Dulwich seemed content to sit back and wait for opportunities as goalmouth action was at a premium other than non threatening efforts from Clunis & Scannell. Clunis was denied again before Dulwich doubled their lead with 5 minutes to half time.

Ashley Carew delivered a corner from the Dulwich left that Scannell met with a thumping header. Dulwich almost had a third when Scannell found space and pulled the ball back to Carew whose volley was just wide.

Halftime 2-0

Dulwich were back on the attack at the start of the second half. Calum Willock was wide with a volley from a Scannell cross & Willock then missed a glorious chance as he headed over from a pinpoint cross from Danny Waldren.

Dulwich were making sure Larkins was on his toes in the Canvey goal as he twice denied Clunis before Ashley Carew missed a good chance to seal the game.

Canvey had their best chance to salvage something with 15 minutes remaining. Ashley Dumas was denied by Phil Wilson but the ball fell to Martin Tuohy who looked certain to score until Matt Drage threw himself in the way of his effort.

Damien Scannell was sent clear with 4 minutes remaining but his lob over the keeper was brilliantly cleared off the line by Steve Sheehan. However, Scannell did get his second of the game in the last minute of normal time.

Substitute Kristian Campbell delivered a low hard cross from the left that Larkins couldn't hold and Scannell fired into the roof of the net.

Scannell thought that he had got a hat trick as he got in behind the defence to finish with aplomb but he had mistimed his run and was marginally offside.

Canvey had two late chances as Waldren blocked an effort and Sheehan headed a corner just wide before the referee called a halt to proceedings.
