Proud to promote International Women's Day

By Mishi Morath

For the first time in our long history Dulwich Hamlet are actively promoting International Women's Day, which is on Sunday 8th March.

The day before, this coming Saturday, we are home to VCD Athletic in the Ryman League Premier Divison, and to acknowledge & mark the importance of women participating in football we sent out vouchers with free tickets to the game to a number of womens' football teams & league across the Capital.

We are also pleased to welcome, having been kindly invited to the game as our boardroom guests by Duncan Hart, two prominent journalists from the on-line side of the media, Kait Borsay & Laura Jones.

Kait is a freelance news reporter and presents on Football 365. She also manages
"The Offside Rule" podcasting on the internet.

Laura is an Owls fan and football blogger. Her blog - "Yes I Can Explain The Offside Rule" - won the Best Female blogger award at the 2014 Football Blogging Awards. Judges on the panel included journalists from The Telegraph, Guardian, BBC and members of the sports industry and charities.

One of our staunch supporters, Fiona Scurlock, had an article published on "The Offside Rule" earlier this week. If you would like to read it then simply CLICK HERE.

Fiona is just one of many female Hamlet fans, and one thing we are particularly proud of at Champion Hill is the fact that we have a decent proportion of women in the make-up of crowds. It clearly shows that coming to Dulwich Hamlet is a friendly, welcoming, safe place for all…songs from the terrace are always backing the team, without stupid sexist, or homophobic slants you might get at many a professional ground. Which is why we contacted some women’s football teams across London, and the leagues they play in, to offer their players the opportunity to come to Champion Hill this afternoon, in recognition of the important role Womens Football plays in our great national sport.

Claudia Jukes, from Dulwich Hamlet Football Club, spoke of the importance of supporting International Women's Day:

"We have made it clear this season that we are not just campaigning against discrimination, but are actively encouraging ALL of our community to attend our games. The anti-homophobia friendly versus Stonewall FC was testament to this, and the free ticket offer to new LGBT fans that followed. We are therefore delighted to continue to underline the message that Champion Hill is a great place to come for women by supporting International Women's Day. Come and be part of our community."

You may not realise though, that looking after women who support our Club isn’t just a ‘modern’ thing. Over a hundred years ago, way back in 1906, a new stand was built, at one of our previous Champion Hill grounds, to hold 250 spectators. And it was reported that: “It should attract the wives and lady loves in greater numbers than ever;” in one of the local papers!

We hope new visitors to Champion Hill on Saturday, as part of our International Women's Day initiative, enjoy their experience enough to come back for a few more games.
