Wasteful Hamlet rue wasted chances and defensive slip

Slough Town ruthlessly seized on a single defensive error as Dulwich wasted numerous opportunities

Gavin Rose named an unchanged side from the victory on Boxing Day as another bumper crowd of 2900 packed into Champion Hill. However, it was Slough who avenged their defeat to The Hamlet earlier in the season, as they ruthlessly seized on a slip by Hamlet skipper Michael Chambers to leave with all the points.

Dulwich were left to rue numerous missed opportunities as they slipped to defeat against Slough Town. It was the home side that created the first opportunity as early as the 3rd minute. Good work by Jason Banton saw the ball arrive at the feet of Ashley Carew 25 yards out. The Hamlet midfielder took aim and his effort looked destined for the top corner until Turner flew to his left to tip the ball over the bar.

Slough then brought a fine save from Preston Edwards when a cross to the far post found Lee Togwell unmarked but Edwards blocked his downward header with his legs.

Dulwich pushed forward looking for an opening goal and Nathan Green headed over from an Ashley Carew free kick. Further good play from Banton lead to Dan Thompson heading the ball back across goal where Nyren Clunis could only direct a weak header wide of the target.

The next chance came in the 13th minute when a ball over the top found Banton who checked inside but his curled effort was just too high, before Nyren Clunis wasted another good chance in the 18th minute. Anthony Cook delivered a peach of a cross and Clunis should have done much better than head high and wide from 8 yards out.

Whilst Dulwich had the majority of the play, Slough presented a real threat when they broke forward and Cheick Toure did well to thwart a dangerous attack when he cut out a ball from Dobson that looked to be threaded through the defence.

Just past the half hour, Anthony Cook was disappointed to only be able to shoot wide after bringing down a long pass from Nathan Ferguson. Dulwich then thought they had taken a 35th minute lead when a through pass from Ferguson saw both Thompson and Baton clear on goal but the assistant flagged Thompson offside as he placed the ball past Turner.

Cook again got in behind the Slough defence with five minutes of the half remaining but his effort, and that of Clunis, were both scrambled away, whilst Clunis also shot straight at Turner right on half time.

Half Time 0-0

Slough opened the brighter side at the start of the second half and Dobson forced Edwards to fly to his right to push his effort out. Dobson could only hit the wall with a free kick from 25 yards after Michael Chambers brought down Sam Togwell and, when the follow up effort was adjudged to have been handled, he could only hit the wall again.

A lofted pass to Jason Banton lead to him cutting inside but his shot was straight at Turner who saved comfortably and after Ashley Carew wasted a free kick on the hour, Slough took a 63rd minute lead.

Michael Chambers was caught in possession on half way and the visitors broke at speed. When the ball was played into Sam Togwell on the edge of the penalty area, he swept a first time effort passed Edwards right hand and just inside the post,

Dulwich pushed in search of an equaliser but the visitors defended in depth and limited their chances. Clunis wasted another opportunity when he shot too close to Turner and Dipo Akinyemi headed over from 6 yards out following an Ashley Carew free kick.

The best chance arrived with just three minutes remaining when Clunis accelerated past his marker and delivered a low cross that was deflected out to Nathan Ferguson but his effort from the edge of the penalty area was blocked by a combination of defenders and Keeper.

Despite continuing to push forward, Dulwich would, like so many times this season, rue their one slip and their own profligacy in front of goal as they slipped to a narrow defeat.
