RUTHLESS LEAGUE LEADERS CUT LOOSE AT IGNATIANS' EXPENSE

By

HARPENDEN:71 - ENFIELD IGNATIANS: 0 - Jon Landi Reports

ENFIELD IGNATIANS continue to suffer against the better sides in the division and the unbeaten league leaders Harpenden emphasised the point by inflicting a 71-0 drubbing on the visitors in round five of London Two North-West.

Although 36-0 down at the break, Ignatians will reflect on a protracted 15-minute spell in which they were on the ascendancy, but a combination of their fragile self-confidence and Harpenden's water-tight defence continually thwarted their scoring ambitions. On the defensive for most of the game, Ignatians also suffered on the scoreboard in the second period when Harpenden all but doubled their lead as the Hertfordshire side emphatically maintained their promotion push.

Despite the magnitude of the scoreline, captain Jake Bates preferred to dwell on the positives: He said: "Although it wasn't reflected on the scoreboard, we delivered a better performance in many ways than the previous week against HAC. The backrow certainly put in a big shift. Man of the Match Wes Warren carried well and their were also good displays from Frank Antwi and Jamie Newport who put in some good tackles. Harpenden are the best side I have played against at this level. They have recruited well during the summer and they've been clocking up big scores against other sides in the division. Despite our losing streak, we have been playing the better sides in the division and, hopefully, we will turn the corner. We have a week off but we are crucially aware of the crucial importance of the next two league games, away to Hammersmith & Fulham and home to Tabard, as both sides are below us in the table."

After the initial win against Harrow, a run four consecutive league defeats has seen Ignatians drop down to ninth in the table in what has become a league of two halves.
