Richardson lifts campaign top honour

By Derick Thomas

Scott Richardson ended a successful personal campaign by being crowned Player of the Season at Fleetwood rugby club’s annual presentation evening.

The flanker not only appeared 21 times for the Melbourne Avenue club but also featured twice for the inaugural Lancashire Royals side. The new county side hands representative honours to ambitious, young players competing at Levels 5 and below.

Richardson was modest about his contribution singling out team-mates who also figured at the awards ceremony.

“A good few players have performed really well this season so it was a surprise to hear my name announced.

“Kris (Phillips) pipped me by five tries in the end after we had a close season. He has the pace to push across the try line so well played to him. Rob Brookfield also deserved his players’ player award for consistent performances.”

Named man of the match on four occasions Richardson aims to keep working hard now the season, in which Fleetwood finished mid-table in the North Lancashire / Cumbria division, is over.

“My aim is to keep fit during close season and be ready to play my part. Hopefully I can push on next season on a personal level and, as a team, we need to keep our early form going.”
