Williams Goal Secures Opening Day Points

By

A second half strike from Jake Williams ensures Flint Mountain begin the season with a win at the Pavilion

After a ten day wait between fixtures, following last week's defeat against Welsh Premier League side Cefn Druids in the NEWFA Challenge Cup, Flint Mountain got their league campaign underway by welcoming Brymbo Victoria to the Northop Hall Pavilion. With Kirk Russell able to take up his spot between the Flint Mountain posts, Dean Hughes settled into his familiar central midfield spot and was joined by Sean Williams in the middle, who was making his debut.

The game started evenly, as both teams looked to establish a lead. The Mountain had the best of the early chances, following a back pass inside the Brymbo penalty area. However, Sean Williams' resulting shot from the indirect free kick was well blocked by an out-rushing defender. Shortly afterwards, Mountain manager Rob Marshall was forced into making an early substitution, as Mark Williams picked up an injury and was replaced by Leon Pickford. As the half drew on, neither side were mustering any clear cut chances until a few minutes before the half time whistle, when Brymbo began to take control and had a couple of decent efforts to take the lead. Firstly, a fierce shot whistled past the post, before Kirk Russell made a couple of good saves to deny the opposition.

At half time, Keiran Farr made way for Dylan Roberts as Mountain looked to improve and grab the all important first goal. The second half saw Flint Mountain begin to press forward and look dangerous, but it still took until just before the hour mark before they finally opening the scoring. After Mountain won the ball on the left, it found Jon Edmonds, who then played the ball towards the far side, where midfielder Jake Williams controlled the ball, took it into the penalty area, before firing past the Brymbo goalkeeper.

Mountain continued to press for further goals, but a stubborn Brymbo were denying them. On as a substitute, Jimmy McGlone raced through one on one with keeper, only for the keeper to make a good save with his feet. With the minutes dying out, Mountain remained camped in the Brymbo half, numerous corners and free kicks ensuring they could control the play up until the final whistle.

Next up for Flint Mountain is the midweek visit of GAP Connah's Quay Nomads U19s to the Pavilion, as we look to build upon this result and make it six points in four days. Nomads will be looking for their first points of the season, after a defeat against Acton on the opening day. We hope to see you on Tuesday evening.
