Redhill 2 Frimley Green 2 Match Report

By

Frimley Manage to end Redhills winning streak with Disciplined performance.

Following Tuesdays performance, today looked like an enormous task as we travelled to face high flying Redhill who up until today had won 13 league games on the bounce.

We travelled with some players missing through illness and injury, Jim Ward, Scott Sanders, Ben Dear love, all unavailable and recent Loanee James Baxter also missing due to a personal commitment. ( By the way, well done James!!)

Onto the game, and the opening exchanges showed why Redhill have done so well previously, a high intensity, controlled and organised outfit, the ball was spread around with purpose as Frimley tried to get a handle on the game. Redhill had a few half chances however Cunningham wasn't troubled in the Frimley Goal with efforts flying high, wide and handsome.

Redhilll did however take the lead, a corner into the box fell down in the 6 yard box, a game of pinball took over as Frimley Desperately tried to clear but the ball just kept deflecting between players and eventually it was stabbed home from about 4 yards.

Frimley began to get into the game and troubled the Redhill backline into defensive errors, one opportunity presented itself to James Robertson who intercepted a bad backpass and was through, unfortunately he was timely tackled before being able to play in Drew Matthews who would have had a 1 on 1 opportunity.

HT and it was 0-1 to Redhill.

Second half mirrored the final 10 of the first, and even scrappy game where Frimley allowed Redhill to play but positioning was disciplined and although Redhill again had some half chances, Cunningham up until this point still needn't to come into play.

Frimley drew level and deservedly so, Ewin Kerwin took 2 players out of the game with some clever footwork and his pinpoint pass played in Drew Matthews on goal, Drew was about to shoot when he was tripped, staying on his feet however, he cleverly played in Robertson to slot home. 1-1

The following exchange became even more scrappy, with both teams cancelling each other out, Cunningham and the backline soaked up all attempts from Redhill and Frimley began to take a foothold on the game and at this point, Frimley looked the most likely to snatch a winner.

Redhill however didn't read the script, a run on the left and deep towards the corner flag, a left footed cross floated over Cunningham into the far post corner and it was 2-1 Redhill. Gutting for the team to concede a goal which the player himself confirmed was a cross.

Frimley however like Tuesday night, didn't' give up. James Dinsdale floated in a deep cross and Luke Taylor was at the back post to drill the ball across goal, the keeper deflected the ball in front of Harry Rapley who smashed the ball home to equalise. 2-2.

Redhill almost scored again, a freekick on the edge of the box look destined for the bottom left hand corner, but Cunningham made a fantastic save.

Redhill were then given another freekick in surprising circumstances, Cunningham adjudged to have held onto the ball for too long and an indirect freekick given just inside the box. The resulting free kick however smashed the left side of the post and out of play.

The Full time whistle went and Frimley were delighted. Not many teams have come to Redhill and taken a point and possibly even being the winning side, but the team can be proud of their performance. Chairmans MOTM went to Joe Moriaty, through this fixture, he was asked to play in 3 different positions to match the threat of Redhill and their changes, he took every change with maturity and the way he managed to contain their player on the left flank was fantastic to see even with a vast pace different between the two.

Next Saturday we host Balham, another side competing for a top 6 place, we may not be fighting ourselves for a top 6 place, but we can have some fun potentially effecting it.

Come on down to the Rec next Saturday 3pm.
