Yesterday (06/01/18), we made the short distance journey again for another derby match, this time against CPD Gaerwen. Only one enforced change that was made to the team from last week’s win in Aberffraw due to unavailability - Andrew Roberts came in for Geraint Siddall in midfield, otherwise the team was unchanged.
First half began quite brightly for Llan, with us dictating the play and pace of the game quite early in the match and we had something to show for it on the 7th minute, when the ball fell to Rich Jones in the box and he coolly slotted the ball out of reach of the hosts goalkeeper with him getting a firm hand on the ball but couldn’t prevent the ball nestling in the net. 1-0 to Llan. Llan continued to dictate play in the middle of the field in the next 10 to 15 minutes with Jerome Sillence having a shot which the Gaerwen stopper making a good stop, but after that, Gaerwen we’re slowly coming back to the game but we were limiting them to half chances all half. Their best chance coming late in the half when the ball was pumped up field, their striker Liam Morris took the ball down expertly, saw the on rushing Pete Finn off his line and went for the lob only for Pete to get back somehow and produce a magnificent one handed save to keep the game 1-0 to Llan going in to Half Time.
Half Time score: Gaerwen 0 - 1 Llan
Second Half began with the hosts upping the tempo a little bit, trying to control the middle of the field a bit more, but Llan just as last week were holding firm and restricting the hosts to half chances and long distances attempts. On 65 minutes, Llan went 2-0 up when the ball was won back in midfield by Tudur Williams, he played a lovely one-two with Substitute Iwan Williams and then kept running down the line crossing to the box where the onrushing Jerome Sillence was there to knock it in. 2-0 to Llan. Couple of minutes afterwards it could have been three,Substitutes Iwan Williams turning sharply in the box and unleashing a thunderbolt that struck the underside of the bar and stayed out somehow. After this Gaerwen knew they had to pile some pressure and they did but still we held firm and limited them to half chances. Until the 80th minute, they found a way back to the game when Arwel Williams went on a mazy run to the box skipping pass 3 defenders was then upended and the referee awarded a spot kick in which Liam Morris duly obliged and scored the penalty. With a good 10 minutes to go, the pressure was really on Llan now with Gaerwen pushing everything forward but could not get passed our firm and resolute back line and the final whistle went much to the relief of the players, management and supporters.
Full Time: Gaerwen 1 - 2 Llan
Overall another excellent performance from the lads. To carry on were we left off from last week was pleasing to see especially against a tough and talented side like CPD Gaerwen on their own patch. I can only say the spirit and togetherness of this squad over the past few weeks has been excellent and it’s showing as a result on the pitch as well. So hats of to everyone for their hard work and commitment.
