The Garforth Town's attempt to become the scourge of Harrogate by beating a Harrogate team twice in 7 days, the boys beat Harrogate Railway a few days ago in the FA Youth Cup, just failed to materialise as the visitors scored 2 very late goals to make sure that they took all 3 points. Despite losing the game the Garforth Town management team were upbeat after the game pointing out that Town arrived with an FA Floodlit League record over the last 3 seasons of played 53, lost 4. In addition it was pointed out that the FA Youth Cup squad players were mostly not chosen for this game presumably having been wrapped in cotton wool and laid on sun loungers to drink chilled non alcholic cocktails in warmer climes in preparation for this week's massive FA Youth Cup tie v FC Hlifax Town. Garforth came very close to drawing first blood on 10 minutes when an excellent slide rule pass from Fletcher got first teamer Martin - Wyatt , playing to aid his fitness after 5 months out with an injury, in behind and Harrogate must have been thankful that their keeper read the developing situation correctly and got out quickly to make a very good smother save. Harrogate took the lead on 24 minutes with their first real chance of the game. A sloppy clearance by a Garforth defender was pounced upon and quickly worked into the Garforth goal. Four minutes later a slighty underhit pass was seized upon by Harrogate and with the Garforth defence out of balance as play had altered in transition the Harrogate forward was given a free header. 2-0 to the visitors at half time. Garforth scored 6 minutes into the second half with Fletcher once again involved. His drag back, twirl and cute forward pass to Martin-Wyatt was followed by the latter powering his way through from the edge of the box to smash it past the Harrogate keeper. The score remained 2-1 for the next 55 minutes or so as Garforth increasingly came to the fore. The game's turning point came on 84 minutes when Harrogate finally put the game to bed with their 3rd goal. It came slightly against the run of play and this was exemplified by the fact that Garforth had a 4 v 4 siuation in the opponent's final third. If trialist O'Gormon's attemted short pass from the edge of the box had found the overlapping Coulthard instead of just being intercepted (by inches) by the back pedalling Harrogate defender the score could well have become 2-2. Instead it became 3-1 to the visitors as the ball was quickly dispatched forward to launch a counter attack. Harrogate soon after made it 4-1 before Martin-Wyatt gave Garforth the last say with another good finish to bag his brace. A good game - well done both teams.
