Droylsden 2 GNE 3

By

If the wins you probably don't deserve taste sweeter there will be no need for sugar in Paul Phillips and Steve Halford's tea for a while.

Had Droylsden taken their chances in this match, particularly in the first half, the Bloods would have been out of sight. However GNE rode their luck and dug in, the showed great resilience to steal the match at the death.

The pace and power of the Droylsden team caused Glossop trouble from the off, Shuaquille Antoine Clarke having free runs from full back and frequently linking up with the lively Dominic Smith. Smith created and just missed frequent chances, hitting the ball over the bar, just wide of the post or testing Russ Saunders. Liam Caddick when closest though, his shot from the edge of the area hitting the post and rebounding into Saunders’ arms. Luke Daly also looked as though he'd scored with a sidefoot shot from the edge of the area, but it was just wide.

Dave Pace’s side will have been disappointed at the prospect of going into the break level, but worse was to come for them in the 44th minute. Connor Martin had wasted Glossop's one glorious chance to this point, but he made no mistake this time, latching on to a quick free kick and powering home from the angle.

Ironically the second half had begun more evenly when DFC levelled things up on 57 minutes. Smith beat the offside trap on the right and got to the byline. He cut back for Ciaron Kilheeney and a player of his goalscoring credentials wasn't going to miss from 12 yards.

Scott Metcalfe was very fortunate to stay on the pitch for a desperately mis-timed tackle on Jason Hill and Droylsden took immediate advantage of the luck when taking the lead. Daly ran into a ball down the left and Saunders rushed off his line to meet the ball. Saunders had to win it, and when Daly skipped past him he was able to centre to Caddick, who could tap it into the empty net.

Glossop made a double substitution, Ben Deegan and Liam Wood entering the fray, and the change was to alter the face of the game. As we got to 10 minutes to go Deegan was brought down in the box and Callum Chippendale stepped up to net the spot kick. Then 3 minutes later, Deegan latched onto a poor clearance and cooly lobbed the keeper. However the ball bounced off the bar, only to bounce to Chippendale who calmly chested the ball down and slotted it home.

Droylsden lost their discipline as a result. Daly was shown a straight red card for an off the ball incident, and minutes later were down to 9 when Danny Hall was dismissed for a frustrated hack at Deegan.

The second red seemed to galvanise them, and somehow they managed to pressure the GNE defence deep in injury time. From a corner the ball fell to the feet of Dylan Smith 12 yards out, and his shot was saved on the line. Fans in the stand couldn't see clearly but Droylsden fans behind the goal were apoplectic. On seeing replays it was easy to see why; the save on the line was by a defender, not the keeper. A slice of luck the Hillmen gratefully took.
