Glossop crash out of the FA Trophy
Without Matty Russell and Daz Mason today, Glossop looked to use the depth of their squad to continue their good run.
They missed Russell and Mason even more than they might've predicted in what turned out to be a very disappointing result and an even more disappointing performance.
The first half passed by with little guile or creativity from either side and it will not live long in the memory of any of the 201 fans in attendance.
Glossop were forced into a first half substitution with Oli Thornely being replaced by Alex Elliott, meaning that Andy Bishop and Mark Canning had to adjust the ranks a little earlier than they would've liked, but you'd be forgiven for having headed to the bar by this point.
The second half was poor by Glossop's recent standards. The defence didn't look composed at all and Brighouse exploited the lack of communication and leadership that seemed to be at the root of the problem.
The opening goal came as Joel Bembo Leta failed to head a long ball clear, leaving his teammates perplexed and desperate to get back on the cover. Aaron Knight found himself through on Russell Saunders' goal and despite two nicks on the way over the line, one from a defender's outstretched leg and one from Saunders himself, it was very much a deserved lead for Brighouse Town.
The second goal wasn't long in coming. This time it was Gabriel Johnson, who had been proving difficult opposition for Adam Cooper, who brought the ball down and rolled it forward into the area with a step over or two. This time the finish went directly into the goal, struck low and hard with his left foot across Saunders. 2 - 0 and it would be hard to make an argument that this wasn't a fair reflection.
The game ultimately petered out for Glossop with Brighouse striking the post and missing a good chance from a cross.
The hosts did have a decent penalty shout go against them and a few half chances that came to very little but an underwhelming showing from the Hillmen on the back of their heroics in midweek.
Pride comes before a fall. What comes after this particular fall will show just how much character this group of players have. On Tuesday they showed that they have it in spades and so the next game can't come soon enough for Mark Canning's and Andy Bishop's boys in blue.
