Gnomes Triumph in the Case of the Missing Runs

A sunny sultry evening saw our heroes boldly confronting the Brodbottom Bashers on their home turf. We won the toss and mindful of the victory last year when the failing light had turned their sprightly fielders into blundering myopics we decided to put them in to bat first again.
Things did not start well and got steadily worse. With some notable and honourable exceptions we bowled with the apparent intention of allowing their batsmen to post a record score. As we walked off the field their only expressed regret was that they hadn’t quite made 200. Just 10 an over needed then.

When we started our innings it looked a s though their bowling was going to be as good as their batting. BUT fine smiting by Desperate, Dredd, Terry (is that to be ‘Fyin’?), Tony (yet to be named) and…wait for it…Tarquin seemed to be putting us back in contention. Enquiries of the Kindergarten, sorry, scorers revealed that the score we had to beat was 182 and that we had 167. Excitement on the boundary reached fever pitch. Duvet who had arrived as support in a rather nifty hooped T shirt in pink and green and Wallis (Barney) who seemed to have been unable to leave his hang-ups at home, could hardly bear to watch.
Royal Albert was at the crease and ‘seeing it big’ which is more than can be said for their fielders. Over followed over ( they tend to do that) the ball made its way to the boundary with satisfying regularity. The fielders just couldn’t see the ball coming in time to stop it. Finally R.A. cut the ball to the square cover boundary and we had passed their score. A victory of staggering proportions had been achieved.

Too good to be true …? Well there was some doubt about the accuracy of the scoring. BUT it was their scoring team who gave us the figures. They told us of the total we had to get and we got it. That’s called a win, so we won.

I think the next fixture against the Broadbottom will be worth playing, they were not happy Bashers at the end of this one – HURRAGH!!
