Ingram Treble Sees Greens Through

By

Gorleston made it past the FA Cup Extra Preliminary round for the first time in their last four attempts thanks to a Connor Ingram hat trick.

The Greens were unchanged from their opening league victory over Thetford.

This was Gorleston's 100th game since Ricci Butler took charge although Reserves boss Scott Butler was standing in for him in the dug out as Ricci was serving the second of a three game touchline ban.

The Greens began well with Luke Goreham hitting the first shot in anger, which was blocked, but it was Stanway who came closest to opening the scoring in the 6th minute when a long, straight ball caught out the Gorleston defence allowing Wayne Blackman to get in behind and prod the ball past Taurean Molloy but it bounced away off the outside of the post.

Four minutes later it was the Greens who opened the scoring.

Connor Ingram played a corner out to Mitch McKay who thumped a volley goalwards. It was blocked but fell back to Connor Deeks who drilled in a low effort through two defenders which clipped off the inside of the post into the net.

After losing their opening two games, Stanway's confidence may have been fragile but they reacted well and within a minute Joe Heron hit a shot which rebounded back off Molloy's crossbar.

Six minutes before the break Gorleston doubled their lead.

A great ball from McKay picked out Joel Watts on the left. The ball was played in to Ismael Fatadjo whose cross was cleared to McKay 22 yards out.

McKay tried his luck with a shot but shinned it. However it turned into a superb pass out to Connor Ingram who brought it under control, stepped inside the defender and calmly slotted the ball into the bottom corner.

Despite lots of strong challenges it was ironic that the first name in the book was the smallest player when Fatadjo was carded after he had worked hard and appeared to win the ball back cleanly.

Gorleston couldn't see the half out without conceding as the hosts pulled a goal back in the final minute after the Greens gave the ball away in midfield. Taylor Bannister pounced on the ball, was too strong for Isaac Burrage and tucked the ball past Molloy.

Rovers made a double substitution at half time and almost equalised within two minutes of the restart when Ben Lampon got on the end of a corner but could only sidefoot into the waiting arms of Molloy.

However it was the Greens who scored next ,six minutes into the half.

Fatadjo and Watts worked hard to stop the Rovers defence from getting the ball clear. McKay picked it up and squared to Connor Ingram centrally who hit a fantastic dipping shot from 25 yards to put his side 3-1 up.

Again Stanway fought back and midway through the half they made it 3-2 when Bannister was given a free header and planted the ball into the net.

Three minutes later though Gorleston gave themselves a two goal cushion again.

Jordan Stanton's cross from the right struck the arm of a Stanway defender. The linesman flagged and the referee gave the free kick. The ref then jogged over and adjudged it to have happened inside the box so pointed to the spot.

It hit the arm, the arm was just out to the side but there wasn't much distance between Stanton and the defender plus the photo shows it wasn't as far into the box as it appeared so Stanway skipper Adam Reakes was understandably unhappy with the decision.

Connor Ingram wasn't bothered though and stepped up to unerringly fire the ball from the spot into the bottom corner.

That goal did seem to knock the stuffing out of Stanway for a while and the Greens were able to sit back a little.

Four minutes from time Jordan Barnett tried his luck from a corner which Molloy had to push over. Molloy then had to react quickly from the resultant corner to deny Lewis Hewitt with his feet.

With a minute to go, Stanway themselves had a big shout for handball in the Gorleston box but the ref gave nothing and linesman at that end kept his flag down.

Gorleston will now travel to Southend Manor in the preliminary round on 19th August after Southend beat Wroxham 1-0.
