Adam Stevens made a number of changes from Tuesday night's defeat at Mickleover. Tom Potts came in at right back, Rhys Lewis replaced Michael Hollingsworth, Ollie Luto started at left back and Lee Shaw returned from suspension.
After a slow start to the match, Workington went ahead on 14 minutes when James Earl headed low from a corner.
The Gingerbreads couldn't get back into the match, then with 7 minutes to go in the half a storm went over The Meres. The referee suspended play due to the lightening. Half an hour later play resumed and halftime was a matter of seconds due to enforced earlier break.
Whatever was said during the break, it worked!
The Gingerbreads were level on 56 minutes. Tom Potts had gone off injured, Danny Meadows had dropped back to the right back position but he got forward to deliver a sublime cross which met Jordan Hempenstall's head to power home.
With The Gingerbreads on top an error in defence saw Workington regain their lead with 20 minutes to go.
Lee Shaw won a penalty but Luke Shaw put the ball high over the bar.
With four minutes to go The Gingebreads were level. It was Jordan Hempenstall again who was able to get something on the end of a Jack Mcmenemy free kick.
There was still time for one final storm. Lee Shaw broke the offside trap and slotted home to send the home support wild, as the match was in it's 91st minute.
The result takes The Gingerbreads up-to second in the table
