The Hamburg Exiles Sevens 2017

On Saturday 3rd June Hamburg Exiles RFC hosted their 41st International Sevens in the Stadtpark. Although the morning was a little damp, the weather gods provided perfect conditions in the afternoon for both players and spectators.

The Exiles were pleased to welcome Blaenau Ffestiniog Clwb Rygbi from the mountains of north Wales and a party from Garches Vaucresson RFC from Paris who ably managed by Victor an Exile from a couple of years ago. We also welcomed Kiel returning to Hamburg 10 years after the unexpected death of their Michael Clarke at this tournament. After a few words, a minute silence was observed in remembrance.

The Exiles were also pleased to welcome sevens from our Hamburg neighbours St. Pauli and HSV as well the Berlin Bruisers and Jenners. Last but not least in every sense, the Front Row Club provided again their unique approach to Sevens.

The pool stage provided entertaining rugby throughout with quite a number of close games and exciting finishes. The two French teams, (the Drunken Frogs and the Beer Barrels) Ffestiniog and St Pauli met in the semi-finals. The Plate and the Final were clear cut games with Drunken Frogs taking the title. However the Welsh took their revenge by winning the traditional post final beer race.

The partying went on well into the night and I believe we were drunken dry which must be some sort of a record!!
