MATCH REPORT : HANLEY TOWN 4 IRLAM 2

By IRLAM FC

Frustrations continue

IRLAM FC continued to frustrate all around in recent weeks, the side producing some excellent attacking flair, only to be punished late in games for not taking earlier solid chances.
Hanley Town away is a perfect example of this, a first half showing that completely blew the home side away, Irlam attacking with flair and pace to completely out perform the hosts. Too many chances to mention came and went in the first half as the crowd joked of an invisible force field around the Hanley goal, but the truth lay more in reality as Irlam simply could not put the ball in the back of the net.
On 25 minutes, Irlam would again pay a high price for chances missed, a quick break down the left for the hosts saw a ball into the Irlam area that was unfortunately turned into the goal by centre half Ryan Ledson. a reminder how cruel this game can be.
Fortunately Irlam skipper Liam Morrison was on hand to restore parity five minutes later, the midfielder intercepting a ball in the midfield before driving through the middle of the park before releasing a low drive into the bottom corner of the Hanley net to make it 1-1 at the break.
The second half would start in disappointing fashion , Hanley Town's Thorpe given a free run and cross from the left side to find Thompson, the Hanley forward with a tap in for a 2-1 lead with just two minutes played.
On 70 minutes, Irlam were caught again, a long goal kick out found the Hanley no9, who then drove at the Irlam defence before firing low across Jones in the Irlam goal, the striker finishing well but given far too much time t make the shot and goal.
Minutes later the hardworking Perry would immediately reduce the home sides lead, a neat give and go around the area put the Irlam winger in to fire under the keeper and bring the score back to 3-2.
Thoughts of a comeback were extinguished 5 minutes later, Irlam losing possession in their final third which was capitalised by a run and goal from Skellern to make it 4-2 on the night.
It is fair to say that the final score does not lie, but Irlam's attacking flair and pace in the first half should have seen them out of sight, such is the quality in the side.
