Huddersfield v Keighley

Keen to avenge Tournament defeats this season to the West Riding Team, Keighley set about Huddersfield with a furious pace, immediately forcing errors from the Hudds Backs and when James Field intercepted a wayward pass he powered his way to the line to be held short but was able to slide the ball to Gould who touched down to open the account. Lennon Curr converted.

A good long restart kick enabled Hudds to pressurise the Keighley defence but patient building and fine phase rugby saw Keighley move relentlessly towards the opposition line and when the Keighley pack were mauling the ball, Leon Hobson-Sheriff stole in and reversed over the line to extend Keighley’s lead. Scott converted.

Huddersfield didn’t appear to be perturbed and were equal to Keighley’s power in the centre of the park and both teams traded plays until half time with the Keighley defence playing good working ball away and clearing their lines successfully when threatened.

HALF TIME – Huddersfield 0 – Keighley 14

Having lost only 1 scrum in the first half, Keighley were determined that this would not be repeated and with Scrum Half and Captain Seavers playing the Matt Dawson “spoiling” role they showed how well they are learning in training and moved the ball with pace and accuracy from the scrum or any loose ball. With a scrum on the Hudds 10m line, Seavers feigned to go left, threw right and Field again fed Hobson-Sheriff who added to his tally which Curr converted.

With Joseph Myers in full flow directly from the restart, Keighley returned to the Hudds half and made ground to the left corner and when a strong ruck formed 5 yards out Seavers popped the ball out for Whitcombe to power over in the corner to add to his impressive try tally since returning from long term injury after Christmas. Scott converted.

With time running out, Keighley continued to press and dominated in all phases, much to the annoyance of Hudds Forwards and again strong mauling by the Keighley pack enabled Whitcombe again to break free and score with Curr completing a thoroughly deserved dominant win.

FINAL SCORE – Huddersfield 0 – Keighley 35

Coaches Comments

Nigel Curr
A very good team performance in both games. In the first Morley were weak and it told with our big pack dominating the close work and the halfback's running the game and scoring tries from all over the park.

The second game with Huddersfield was more competitive in all departments. Our strong forwards overpowered their smaller pack after a while and we dominated them using our size and the speed of our outside backs.

The most pleasing aspect from my point as the Backs Coach was shutting out two teams and not conceding any tries in one day with back to back games in the spring sunshine. The way our halfbacks pulled the strings in both game was very satisfying and shows what we are coaching in training is working and the players are starting put it into practice in the games.
