Nashville Bingham Cup 2016 - Results

By Oliver Birrell

A round-up of our Bingham Cup 2016 campaign results in Nashville Tennessee USA.

The Steelers are back from their largest tour to date having travelled across the pond to Nashville Tennessee with over 120 members of the club in tow. It's been a hugely successful trip where we may not have got every result the club could have wanted, but each and every team has come back stronger than before and our results across the club are mightily impressive.

The matches were played across three days, with temperatures of over 30 degrees being recorded at times, it was a step outside of the comfort zone for us UK weathered players!

The 1st and 2nd XV were both drawn into Tier 1 of the tournament and of the 36 teams competing at the tournament (as you can see below) the Steelers were the only club to have two of its teams place within the top 10 positions. With the 1st XV coming 6th overall and the 2nd XV coming 10th.

Final Top 10 Rankings:

Melbourne Chargers A
Sydney Convicts A
Brisbane Hustlers
Washington Renegades
Gotham Knights A
Kings Cross Steelers A
Seattl Quake A
San Francisco Fog
World Barbarians
Kings Cross Steelers B

A highlight for the Steelers 2nd XV in the tournament was coming up against not just one, but two of the Sydney convict teams. A bruising first encounter of the tournament against the convicts 1st XV set our team up with a solid defence and stinging attack that saw us fight through to facing their 2nd XV in the second stage of the knockout tournament. The second encounter with our southern hemisphere rivals however went more the Steelers way, and although a tight match, the Steelers came out on top to see the team dubbed 'King of the B Teams' among the IGR community.

The Steelers 3rd XV had a hugely successful tournament after entering straight into a challenging tier 2 pool they fought valiantly and entered into the Hoagland Tier of the knockout competition competing for the Hoagland Vase.

They successfully beat the Ottawa Wolves and Charlston Blockade to win the Hoagland Vase, with James Brandon the 3rd XV captain, leading them to their first piece of silverware since the team began in 2015!

The Steelers 4th XV were representing for the first time at an IGR tournament and it was quite the experience for the squad. Getting points and their first try in their pool matches they were eventually knocked out of the tournament but for a first showing, and what was many of the squads first ever tournament they had an epic time and really grew as a squad.
