Royals outgun Outlaws in final flurry

By

Leamington Royals entertained Nottingham Outlaws A at the crofts on Saturday, looking for their first win of the season.

The Royals had played Outlaws twice during the season already and pushed the Nottingham side close on both occasions, but it was a victorious afternoon for Leamington Royals, dispatching a 44-16 win over their old rivals.

Both teams started well, Outlaws were looking good over the gain line and with end to end rugby being played out, neither team had been unable to break the deadlock until 20 mins when Raiders went over for the try (converted). Royals replied pretty much straight away, with a jinxing run from 10 meters out by Loz Howard who rounded his opponent to dive over. Outlaws took the kick off and it was taken by Carnall in his last game for Royals, his quick thinking run, passed to a running Birch who put Alford into space who ran half the length of pitch to go over, Royals taking the lead. Both defences were strong but Outlaws proved their quality with another try close to half time which was converted. The Royals had last word before halftime with a well worked set of six for Alford to cross the whitewash for his second.

Leamington Royals were looking to put a solid second half performance in and tightening up their game and they did just that, tries from M Baldwin, a dancing forward run from D Birch (converted Carnall) saw them take a hold of the game. Royals were piling on the pressure and this told when Outlaws knocked on, setup from the scrum for an easy walkover 5 meters in for R Oliver (converted Carnall). Nottingham had not give up hope just yet, fine running from the back line saw them deep into the Royals half, rare mistakes by Royals saw Outlaws nip in for another try. But it was to be the last as Royals dominated rest of the match, some excellent rugby league was on show and some moves off the training ground saw tries from S Alford for his hatrick (converted Carnall), new wing Ant Freeman who has a bright future with Royals and to round the day off and a fitting end to his Royals career, Catain Marcus Pask crossed the line for the final play of the game with a typical forward jinking run, Pask converted his own try.

Royals take a deserved win 44 -16.

Retiring Captain Marcus Pask said "A tough season had seen Leamington compete with some of the bigger rivals in the midlands region, it hadn't gone to plan, but the Royals can take some heart from this season, we had lost every game until now, some heave defeats earlier on that didn't do us any favours, but we stuck at it. We've had many new faces at training this season and its been a steep learning curve for us all. The boys can be proud of what we have achieved this season, I'm sure they will build on from here in preparation for 2012. Its been a pleasure to play for the Royals and was a fitting end to get a Win in my last game. I wish the Royals all the best for the future."
