LADIES KEEP WINNING RUN GOING IN WEST MIDLANDS REGIONAL WOMENS LEAGUE

“Great performance today. Dug really deep to get 3 points after going behind to a really good side. Good team performance. Our defence were excellent. ” Ian Smith, Manager

Shrewsbury started well and forced a couple of early corners which Leek defended well. Leek then had an effort on goal when Michaela Lockett put Rehanne Mellor in with a half chance and she did well to get a shot away but wide of the target.
Shrewsbury then worked a good move down the right and the ball was pulled back to an on rushing striker who couldn’t get a shot on target.
Alice Painter then won the ball in midfield and supplied Katie Maya who went past two players but had her shot blocked on the edge of the box.
The next Shrewsbury attack was well cut out by the Leek defence when a back pass deceived the keeper when it hit uneven ground and agonisingly rolled into the net for an own goal. The game was then hard fought end to end until half time with both teams having chances.
Half time Leek 0 - 1 Shrewsbury.
Leek started the second half well and had an early chance when Mellor again ran through but a defender just got back to intercept.
Shrewsbury had the next chance on goal with a good shot which keeper Hannah Austin
pushed up onto the bar catching the rebound.
Leek then started to get on top and produced more chances which couldn’t be taken. On 60 minutes Rehanne Mellor broke through again and scored the equaliser on her debut with a great shot across the keeper into the bottom corner.
Leek then piled on the pressure looking for the win and Jules Kendrick supplied Mellor again but she hit the post.
Shrewsbury then broke through on goal forcing Austin into an excellent low diving save.
Elise Skelding had been introduced by Leek in the second half and was causing lots of problems for the Shrewsbury defence. Shrewsbury then forced a series of corners which Leek had to defend well. On 70 minutes Mellor again hit the frame of the goal and Skelding was following in to score the second goal for Leek to put them in front. Leek Then had a good spell and tried to get a third but Shrewsbury battled hard to prevent this. The last few minutes Leek defended their advantage and played the game out for a good 2-1 win against a good Shrewsbury Town team.

Leek squad: Hannah Austin, Charlotte Bromley, Naomi Sale-Hancock, Emma Smith, Simone Kelsall, Jules Kendrick, Alice Painter, Izzy Wretham, Michaela Lockett, Katie Maya, Rehanne Mellor, Elise Skelding, Lacey-May Smith, Kirsty Ryder, Emily Boon.
