Two points dropped..

Late leveler haunts Town

Lydney travelled the relatively short trip to Shrivenham hoping to wipe out the memory of the disappointing 2-0 mid-week defeat at the hands of Royal Wootton Bassett. With Sam Elliott & Ross Gabriel still out injured and Jack Rutter unavailable Towns defensive options were stretched but were able to welcome Tom Handley & Archie Brennan who have joined the club from Cheltenham Town Academy.

Lydney started strongly up the slope and immediately put the home team under pressure. On 5 minutes Lewis Halford broke down the left and his cross found Declan Morley-Lyne who laid the ball into the path of Lewis Thompson to fire home. In the 23rd minute Thompson turned provider when he fired the ball across goal into the path of Archie Brennan but this time keeper Mike Alexander tipped the ball over the bar. A minute later a Matty Board shot on goal was saved by Alexander.

The home team made sporadic attacks into the Lydney half and on 28 minutes they should have equalised when Josh Morse screwed his shot badly wide. 2 minutes later Lydney increased their lead when Thompson broke through and this time returned the favour by passing into the path of Morley-Lyne who duly fired home. Shrivenham pushed forward and on 32 minutes winger Dan Hale shot tamely at keeper Jordan Dibble. On 36 minutes Morley-Lyne played Thompson in on goal but his shot was pushed away for a corner by Alexander. From the ensuing cross Halford saw his shot on goal blocked by a defender a fact repeated only a minute later with another Halford effort. In the 40th minute another Halford break down the left saw him play Thompson in on goal but his shot was deflected onto the bar and cleared to safety. On the stroke of half-time and despite all of Lydney’s pressure a quick break by the home team down the left saw the ball land at the feet of Sam Ockwell on the far post who fired the ball past keeper Dibble to make it 2-1 at the break.

The home team came out in determined mood and in the first minute Dan Drewitt found himself through on goal but he fired his effort wide. Lydney pushed forward and a free kick on the edge of the Shrivvy box saw Thompsons effort blocked. Another free kick was awarded following another foul and this time Morley-Lyne curled the ball narrowly past the far post.

In the 53rd minute Thompson laid the ball out to Halford on the left but his low hard cross into the box eluded everyone. On the hour mark the home team broke down the left and the ball landed at the feet of Lewis Petrie who fired home. Despite this set back Lydney pushed forward again and a Morley-Lyne effort was deflected away for a corner. With the game now very open Lydney lost the ball in mid-field and Shrivvy powered forward but thankfully Petrie’s shot this time went wide. Lydney then had a glorious chance to retake the lead when Thompson beat the offside trap but after rounding the keeper somehow managed to fire his shot over the bar with the goal at his mercy. Thompson was again involved a minute later when he played Halford in but he screwed his shot over the bar.

In the 68th minute Halford brought out a save by keeper Alexander resulting in a corner and although Boards cross into the box found Steve Warren on the far post his shot went over the bar. In the 75th minute Lydney finally managed to retake the lead courtesy of one of the most bizarre goals seen. Thompson again broke through on goal and into the box where he was brought down. With everyone watching the referee he emphatically indicated no foul but meanwhile the ball was still rolling gently forward
and with everyone seemingly more concerned at the referees decision it rolled into the back of the net. At this point the referee had no alternative but to award a goal, one of the strangest I have seen in over 50 years of football!!

This setback saw the home team pile everyone forward but the Lydney defence held firm. In the 88th minute a seemingly innocuous challenge by Warren on the half way line was harshly penalised. With Shrivvy piling everyone into the box a high ball into the danger area was inevitable and was unfortunately not dealt with by the Lydney defence allowing Luke Cordery to force the ball over the line to give the home team a share of the spoils.

This result was a disappointing loss of 2 points in a game that Lydney should have been out of sight of in the first half and indeed even in the 2nd half chances went begging. Lydney will certainly need to defend better when they play our old nemesis Brimscombe & Thrupp at Brimscombe on Tuesday night. We then face another Gloucestershire side Fairford Town at home next Saturday who despite being below us in the table recorded a remarkable 3-0 win away to high flying Bishops Cleeve last weekend, certainly the shock of the weekend.
