The Spartans grind out the first win of the season.

By

In a close and tense encounter the Spartans just edged the game scoring two try's while keeping OB's scoreless.

Recent results during last season versus Old Bedians 2 suggested that that Spartans would have to work very hard to get anything out of the game. The Spartans started brightly pressurising the Old Bedians defence leading to an early try from outside centre Chris C on right hand side. The conversion was missed. 5-0 for the Spartans.

Both sides tried hard in the wet and rainy conditions of the first half but neither side could get over the try line. Both sides made a number of ball handling errors in the poor weather conditions. The Spartans took the opportunity to score 3 points from a penalty inside the 22 with 10 minutes of the half left.

Half time score 8-0 for the Spartans.

The weather was drying up in the second half which eliminated some of the handling errors form both teams. The Spartans forwards worked hard to give the team option runners in attack. A second try was scored 20 minutes into the 2nd half from a back line move as fly half Callum M. made a line break scoring under the posts. Karlos converted. 15-0 for the Spartans.

In the last 20 minutes the Spartans came under sustained pressure in defence inside their own 22 from Old Bedians attacks. Callum M was yellow carded and sin binned for a ruck infringement leaving 14 Spartans to hold on and keep Old Bedians at bay. Which they managed with a scrambling and resilient effort in defence. It was not pretty at times, through there was plenty of effort and hard work that saw the Spartans through. The Spartans held on to win the game 15-0.

Thank you to Old Bedians for a very competative game played in the right spirit by both teams with a referee who also helped the game with a firm but fair approach.

Try's: Chris C and Callum M. 1 Conversion and 1 penalty for Karlos.

Next week Saturday the 15/9 the 1st team travel away to Manchester 2’s.
