Slough Town responded to the disappointment of Saturday’s defeat at St Neots with an emphatic away win at second-placed Redditch United on Tuesday evening, which lifts the Rebels into third spot.
The visitors were without Simon Dunn through injury, so drafted in Sean Fraser to partner Lee Togwell in central midfield, with Nathan Smart also making a return to the starting line-up to partner Mark Nisbet in central defence.
Redditch had the first opportunity of the match, with top scorer Dior Angus – son of former Rebels defender Terry – denied by a save from Jack Turner.
Slough responded with James Dobson having a shot deflected through to Ethan Ross in the Redditch goal, but the hosts had made the better start and took the lead through Angus with 17 minutes played, the striker beating two Slough defenders before playing the ball past Turner.
The lead lasted just seven minutes though, Slough responding in fine style with Chris Flood bending the ball past Ross from around 12 yards after Togwell laid it off to him.
Turner was called upon to make a superb save from Spencer Weir-Daley on 34 minutes as he spread himself to block.
Redditch were made to pay for missing that chance as the Rebels took the lead seven minutes later, Manny Williams finding space between the home central defenders to meet Warren Harris’ cross with a header which beat Ross.
Slough had another half-chance to extend their lead before the half time whistle, but Flood’s cross-cum-shot evaded both Williams and Harris.
The Rebels started the second half as they ended the first, and twice went close with both Dobson and Flood firing inches wide.
But on 54 minutes Flood was on target again to give Slough breathing space. This time he finished expertly after Harris found him with a header from George Wells’ cross.
And 15 minutes later the three points were sealed with a fourth goal from Harris, as the winger got on the end of a long pass from Josh Jackman and poked the ball past Ross.
This gave Rebels joint managers the unexpected chance to make changes and freshen things up ahead of Saturday’s big FA Cup tie against Poole, with Gavin James, Matt Lench and Nathan Webb all introduced.
Slough had further chances to extend their lead, but Jackman produced a fine save from Ross, with the ball then cleared before it could run for Fraser to finish.
