Nuneaton Borough 1 Southport 4

Nuneaton Borough suffered a 4-1 defeat at home to bottom side Southport on Saturday afternoon at a windswept Liberty Way.

The visitors, who arrived pointless, took the win, thanks to doubles from attacking duo Jack Sampson and Dion Charles. Boro’s response was from Dior Angus, who returned from injury with an appearance off the bench.

Southport got off to a dream start, their first shot on goal, in the third minute, nestled in the bottom corner as Sampson poked one around a defender, giving the unsighted Louis Gray no chance to stop it. Charles was up next, James Hurst couldn’t cut out a through ball and left the pacey attacker one on one with Danny Burns. The Boro’ centre half marshalled him to the byline, where he squeezed off a shot from a tight angle. Gray came out and blocked the shot but the ball squirmed under him. The Nuneaton ‘keeper got a hand on the ball but Charles booted it free and poked it home to double the lead in the 40th minute.

It would get worse for the Boro’, as, on the stroke of half-time, Sampson scored his second. Port worked the ball well down the left and, the ever dangerous, Devarn Green whipped it across for Sampson to add his second with an unopposed shot in to the bottom right corner this time.

Michael Tweed and Dior Angus came off the bench and the former sparked a little life in to the Boro’ side. His exciting run and shot marking Boro’s best chance of the afternoon up to that point. Tweed was again in the thick of the action when former Boro’ favourite David Morgan hacked him down, earning a second yellow and an early bath.

Enoch Andoh, who scored Boro’s first of the season on Tuesday at Boston, made their second, beating a couple of defenders and teeing up Angus in the box to power an unstoppable drive in to the back of the net. Belief that there could be a miraculous comeback was short-lived though as Charles struck for the second time as Boro’ threw men forward looking for another goal.

The 4-1 final score somewhat flattered the visitors as there wasn’t much between the two sides, they did however show the kind of ruthless efficiency in front of goal that the Boro’ lacked. Nicky Eaden and Lee Fowler now face two matches in three days as they face another couple of teams fighting at the wrong end of the table. Guiseley away on Saturday the 25th of August, is followed by a home match with Brackley Town on Bank Holiday Monday, the 27th of August.
