Girls U18s

We are an extremely friendly team that are keen to encourage girls on their rugby journey. # This Girl Can.

Whatever your age, ability or experience there is room for you at our club. The girls are very supportive and you will instantly have a new group of friends. A number are leaving for University shortly but their bond will continue and we feel certain our recently formed ladies team will benefit during vacations from their return.

Always looking to recruit new players from school years 11, 12 and 13, we welcome absolute beginners as well as experienced players (Union or League). We have a team that consists of players that have only started this season and players that have been with the club since it was founded some 4 years ago. The ability range is great some players have represented Yorkshire and the North while others have no ambition in that area. What they all have in common is a desire to do their best for the team, for their friends.

The coaching team aims to develop every player to achieve their best potential, they are led by Brian Parsons the senior coach, who is grumpy but with a heart of gold holding an England RFU Level 2 Licence. He is assisted by Gary Bloodworth and Richard Culf.

Gary is a former rugby league professional and brings a dynamic influence to the players and team. His area of expertise is back play and his energy and enthusiasm is boundless. Qualified as a rugby league coach nonetheless and his daughter is a current player.

Richard Culf is a former rugby union and league player who has been coaching with the girls section for over 2 years and has a wealth of experience and knowledge in forward play. Richard is completing his preliminary qualifications of ERCA Level 2 coach and his daughter also is a current player for the team.

The U18s Team is managed by Sharon Spencer, assisted by Karla Evans both whose daughters are current players.

We are always looking for volunteers as well as players to help with various roles within the Girls Teams, so if you think you could help please get in touch. We are also always on the lookout for sponsors for the girls which has proved difficult over the last few years, so again if you think you can help please get in touch.

Training takes place at Old Brodleians RUFC every Wednesday evening from 6.30 – 7.45 and we endeavour to play other teams every Sunday (times vary).

I started at Brods soon after it formed 4 years ago and immediately made lots of new friends. I’ve had a great time and we even played at Twickenham a few years ago. I got onto the England Rugby Developing Player Programme (ERDPP) for Yorkshire and found that I didn’t like the pressure. As I pushed myself and gained confidence I went for it again and made it into the Yorkshire and North of England U15s squad. This year I have made it into the Yorkshire U18s. Really though I just love playing with all my friends at Brods. I’m one of the youngest in the U18s but age makes no difference. Brods is my family, I can say that because my mum and dad say it as well. It’s such a friendly, sociable club.

I was a founder member and was there at the first training session along with Gabby and Kayleigh. I started on the wing as I was a bit scared, especially of tackling. Tackling is now a strength and I love running at people. I moved to the centre and now owing to players not being available I am covering at flanker, I love it there you get so involved and I hope to continue playing there. The coaches say we all need to play in a variety of positions and may not settle on one position until playing in the senior game. I’ve learnt so much. I’m, off to University this year and I am only choosing Uni’s with women’s rugby teams. I will miss the girls so much but when at home I will play for the Brod’s Ladies team. Still got this years tour to look forward to, they’re always great fun.

I started playing when I was 8 and loved being the only girl and taking on the boys. When I moved up here I was invited by one of the girls to come and play for Brod’s U18s girls and really enjoyed it. Because of the distance after one year I moved to a closer club for a year but still remained friends with the Brod’s girls. When we moved back this way I naturally came back to Brod’s and love it here. I’m taking a year out and intend playing for the Ladies team during that year.

Having been part of the Old Brods 'family' from the U13s team all the way to now playing for the U18s team, I think it's safe to say that Brods is an important part of me. I have been given so many opportunities and once in a lifetime experiences throughout my time with Old Brodleians. For example; I played the curtain raiser game at Twickenham before England V Samoa and was selected for ERDPP which has allowed me to develop my game and make new friends with girls from other teams. I've also been on two tours with the club, which I thoroughly enjoyed. The support provided from people behind the scenes makes Old Brodleians second to none
