Ollerton Town got their first win of the season on Saturday afternoon as Dave Winter’s men defeated Harworth Colliery by the one goal to nil.
After a draw and a loss in their previous two encounters, Ollerton needed to get three points on the board sooner rather than later but just like their last two games, Ollerton were left frustrated at their inability to finish teams off as they should’ve been comfortably ahead at half time.
In fact they were almost ahead inside the opening minute. Max Curzon thought he had given Ollerton the lead, slotting into an empty net, but the referee brought the game back for a foul on Harworth ‘keeper Luke Herriot.
Two minutes later however, Ollerton did go ahead. Good work by Tom Cooke, making his first start since returning to the club, ended in him crossing the ball towards Gav King and he found the net for his second in three games.
Ollerton continued to pile on the pressure and had three or four good chances before half time to extend their lead but were denied by a mixture of wasteful finishing and good saves by Herriot.
Harworth had failed to trouble Ollerton ‘keeper Joey McCormack in the first half but they upped their game in the second period and in the 49th minute, McCormack had to be at his best to tip a Harworth free kick round the post.
Both teams were now having chances and again, McCormack was called into action to deny the visitors.
In the 68th minute, Ollerton were reduced to ten men as captain Sam Stretton was sent off for his second bookable offence, giving Harworth’s hopes of getting something from the game a real boost.
In the 77th minute, Ollerton had a chance to kill the game off as Conor Higginson went through one-on-one but he saw his effort saved by Herriot to set up a tense, last ten minutes.
Ollerton brought on defenders Alex Sennett and Aaron Sennett-Neilson in the final stages of the game to tighten things up and in the end, Gav King’s early goal was enough to give the Town the three points.
