King Hat-Trick Not Enough As Ollerton Lose 9-Goal Thriller

By

Ollerton lost 6-3 against Selby Town on Wednesday night

A hat-trick by prolific marksman Gav King was not enough to give Ollerton a second, successive victory on Wednesday night as a clinical display by Selby Town same them run out 6-3 winners.
Ollerton went into the game unbeaten in their four previous displays against Selby and the North Yorkshire side were looking to end their Ollerton hoodoo and keep up their good, early season form.
It was the home side who started the strongest however and they could have taken an 11th minute lead. Good inter-play ended in King heading the ball down for strike partner Max Curzon but from close range, he could only direct his shot into the chest of Selby stopper Peter Lawrie.
Seven minutes later, debutant Jake Tittley overlapped from left back and saw his driven shot deflected into the side netting for an Ollerton corner.
Selby then began to grow into proceedings and in the 20th minute, Carl Stewart found space inside the area to thump an effort towards goal but a brilliant finger tip save by Joey McCormack directed the ball onto the Ollerton cross bar.
Not long after, Selby took the lead. The ball was played through the Ollerton defence and Liam Flanagan was able to out-pace and out-muscle Ben Bowring before slotting the ball under McCormack.
Ollerton found themselves under some strong pressure but in the 37th minute, they managed to draw level. Gav King pounced on some defensive hesitation to beat Lawrie to the ball before lobbing the 'keeper.
That sent the teams into half time level but two minutes after the restart, Ollerton took the lead. King broke between the lines and as he closed on goal, with no other options ahead of him, Ollerton's top 'scorer from last season drilling the ball into the bottom corner, giving Lawrie no chance.
Dave Winter's men would've been hoping to maintain their advantage but instead, a crazy ten minutes saw Selby race ahead. In the 54th minute, Stewart was given too much time to slot home to draw the visitors level.
Three minutes later, it was 3-2. A cross from Flanagan was eventually turned in by Charlie Clamp after the ball hit the post and deflected in off the Selby man.
Selby then tightened their grip on proceedings as they made it 4-2. A stunning strike by Joe Dale from range flew into the top corner leaving McCormack with no chance.
In the 69th minute, Ollerton had a chance to get back into the game as they were awarded a free kick on the edge of the area. King stepped up, looking to seal his hat-trick, but his effort went just over the bar.
With around 15 minutes to go, Selby made it 5. A ball over the top found Stewart and he was able to flick the ball in for his second of the evening.
To Ollerton's credit, they kept fighting and a minute later, they made it 5-3 through that man King. A weaving run saw him create space in the area and though his initial shot was blocked, he lashed the rebound into the back of his net for his hat-trick.
There was to be no comeback however as Selby got their sixth. After a torrential down pouring, McCormack was unable to hold a Selby shot and the ball rolled to Clamp who converted from two yards out.
Even with the game in its dying embers, Ollerton had chances. Firstly, Aaron Sennett-Neilson fizzed a shot just wide of the post after being played through by Higginson before Higginson himself had an opportunity, firing over after bringing the ball down on his chest.
King could have gotten a fourth goal in the last minute of the game but he could only direct Sam Stretton's cross onto the roof of the net.
