After 4 years of Ossett Albion coming out on top in the local Evostik league derby, Grant Black was confident that situation would be rectified as the Reds made the short journey across town.
Black had to make changes with Andy Hawksworth still injured & with Danny Gibbons unavailable Anthony Mackie was moved to Right back with Ryan Ferguson given a start in midfield.
A good crowd watched as the game got under way with Town looking the stronger side and creating the early chances.
Albion played the long ball game up to Danny South and looked to play off him, Alex Low & Josh Snowden did well in the opening exchanges in containing the dangerous front man.
It was Town who opened the scoring after 10 minutes after good work from Alex Peterson and Kai Hancock whose efforts saw the ball drop to Martin Pembleton who unleashed a left foot volley from 18 yards beating the keeper low to his left to give the Reds a well deserved 1-0 lead.
Grant Blacks men continued to dominate the game up to half time & created many chances including being awarded a penalty.
Kai Hancock took responsibility and placed the ball on the spot, the keeper was equal to Hancocks penalty attempt and as the ball was saved it came back into play off the keeper and Hancock was unlucky not to score from the rebound, only a last ditch clearance off the line prevented Albion going in at half time 2-0 down.
Half Time Ossett Albion 0 Ossett Town 1
The 2nd half began with neither side making any changes and again it was Town that controlled the play creating more chances but as in the last game against Droylsden failing to find the net.
Albion took heart from Towns failure to kill the game off and had a 25 minute spell where the Reds had to defend their slender lead and some strong pressure saw Leigh Overton make a few good saves to keep Albion out.
The Reds did have the ball in the back of the net when Kai Hancock broke through and scored from a difficult angle but was dubiously given offside by the Linesman.
Nathan Curtis replaced Ryan Ferguson in right midfield for Town.
Town came back into the game and looked as though they were capable of seeing the game out at 1-0 but then the ball dropped to Danny South in the 83rd minute and he directed the ball past Overton to level the score at 1-1.
The board went up to show 4 minutes of added time just as the Reds were awarded a corner. Albion brought every player back into the penalty area as Steve Ridley fired in the corner from the left and after a spell of head tennis a superb overhead kick from youngster Josh Snowden in the 90th minute looped into the top corner to give him his 2nd goal of the season and send the players, management and fans into a state of delirious excitement.
The final whistle blew with Ossett Town taking the honours with a 2-1 victory to end Albions recent dominance of this derby fixture.
The Reds now move on to their next home fixture, the FA Cup tie against Consett F.C. to be played at Ingfield on Saturday 2nd September, kick off 3pm.
