FA Cup triumph for the Reds

By

Peterson & Hancock seal the win in tough match !

The Reds welcomed Consett AFC to Ingfield for the FA Cup 1st preliminary round with Grant Black looking to progress further after beating Sheffield FC in the previous round.

The magic of the FA Cup provides shocks in the early rounds in one of the worlds most famous competitions and today's fixture against the Northern league side would prove to be a big test as Ossett Town found out in last seasons competition that even if they are technically one league below us teams from this league are tough, capable and difficult to beat as was proved last season when the Reds played Billingham Synphonia and needed a replay at home to win the tie.

The Reds made some changes from Bank Holiday Monday's victory in the local derby against Ossett Albion.

Danny Gibbons was available and started at right back which saw Anthony Mackie pushed into wide midfield in a 4-4-2 formation.

The opening exchanges showed that the visitors were a well organised side and early on they tested Leigh Overton in the Ossett goal with right winger Shaun Ryder causing problems with his pace and direct approach play.

The Consett back four held a very high line and the Reds forwards found themselves in offside positions far too often.

Consett looked dangerous on the attack and in form striker Sweet hit a fierce volley but Overton was equal to the effort as he tipped the ball over the bar at full stretch.

Minutes later it was No 9 Sweet again who saw his shot rebound off the post and out for a goal kick.

Ossett at the other end were creating chances, the best fell to Kai Hancock who found himself one on one with the keeper 8 yards out, but he was denied as his left foot shot was saved by the outstretched leg of Ross Coombe in the visitors goal.

Steve Ridley put a great ball in over the top to Anthony Mackie but as he put the ball through he was fouled, the ref played advantage and as Mackie received the ball he rode a challenge and broke through with just the keeper to beat and unbelievably the ref blew for the foul on Ridley ???

In added time of the 1st half, Danny Craggs received the ball on the edge of the box and drilled a low shot through a crowded penalty area into the bottom corner of the net to give Consett a deserved 1-0 lead at half time.

At half time Grant Black changed the formation into 3-3-4 replacing Danny Gibbons with Issac Assenso and moving Ridley from left back up into midfield leaving Alex Low, Issac Assenso & Josh Snowden as a back three.

With a more attacking look about them the Reds started to put pressure on the visitors and the pressure paid off when they won a free kick. Ridley curled the free kick into the box and keeper Coombe half heartedly attempted to collect the ball but Alex Peterson beat him to it and headed the ball into the net to level the score at 1-1.

Consett were straight back on the attack and their danger man Sweet was once again denied by a superb save from Overton.

Anthony Mackie was booked for dangerous play after fouling Sweet with a cynical tackle and was probably lucky not to have received a straight red. Sweet was unable to continue and was substituted which was a definite plus for the Reds.

The game was either sides to win and there was a period of end to end play which resulted with the Reds breaking on the right and as the ball was crossed the Consett centre back headed the ball out to the feet of Kai Hancock who hit the ball down into the ground and watched the ball bounce over the keeper into the net to see Ossett take a 2-1 lead.

Consett then went all out to find an equaliser again hitting the post for a 3rd time. Some resolute defending from the back three kept the visitors at bay assisted not for the 1st time by some unbelievable saves from Leigh Overton who frustrated the visitors strike force at every attempt.

Sam Wright came on in the 85th minute to sure up the midfield.

The Ref stated 4 minutes of added time and the Reds worked hard all over the pitch to see the game out to the final whistle.

A tough game ultimately decided by the Reds taking their chances and denying the visitors theirs with a bit of help from the woodwork.

Personally I thought Consett were the best side the Reds have met this season backed by a strong following of vocal and lively supporters. It was nice to see their supporters vigorously applauding the players at the end of the match even though they had lost the game.

We all wait in anticipation for the draw on Monday to see who the Reds will face in the next round.
