Thankfully the mornings sleet and rain had given way to cloudless blue skies by kick off, but a strong wind did its level best to ruin the game as a spectacle at Wallington's very cold Oakford Park ground. Percy Main were much improved defensively, as the back four bolstered by the welcome return of Ant Ridley, contained the home side until Ben Fenwick's wonder strike just before the hour mark.
Unfortunately for the visitors it was the other end of the park that contributed to their undoing as unavailability of forwards Chris Glass and Jonny Storey who had played so well in last weekend's defeat of FC United of Newcastle, meant that Wallington goalkeeper Aaron Carr didn't have too much to do during the course of the afternoon, although the home custodian proved his mettle as he pulled off a superb save from Ben Senior mid way through the second half, with the game finely poised.
Wallington's Michael Angus looked to unlock the Main defence early on, his right wing corner was kicked from the line by Adam Green and sent a free kick just wide of the target. Thomas Truscott for the home side, tried his luck on a couple of occasions and John Meehan sent Shaun Backhouse scrambling, but his effort was narrowly wide, while in first half stoppage time Mark McDonnell's corner for Percy Main was headed just past the post by Robert Hamilton.
The start of the second half saw Angus supply Truscott for Wallington, who turned and fired wide, while in reply Steven Hurd was off target and McDonnell saw his free kick held by the goalkeeper, but the deadlock was broken on 58 minutes as Wallington's Fenwick fired a speculative effort past the dive of Backhouse from at least 30 yards. It was an effort which might have normally troubled the horses in the adjacent field, but on this occasion it found the top corner of the net and what a goal it was.
Percy Main upped the anti and forced a succession of corners, which ultimately went unrewarded, although they came very close to an equaliser as Senior cut in and unleashed what looked like a goalbound effort, but Carr was equal to it with a fingertip save, which put the ball behind for another flag kick.
Wallington got their crucial second goal on 83 minutes as a low centre from the left seemed to evade all and substitute Andy Bell slotted home. There was still time for Green for Percy Main to bring a save from Carr and Hurd skimmed the crossbar with a shot in injury time.
