Another impressive away performance

By

Consistency and commitment showing

A decent Monday night crowd of 171 saw an intriguing game at the new home of Aveley when both sides will be disappointed that they did not come away with all three points.

The visitors buoyed by great form going into this game started off well, the pacey Sandro Costa (Dias Fernandes) went down the left-hand side, crossed to Eoin Casey but the ball was an inch away from Casey's path, and went away from danger.

The home side then had their first effort on goal but it was blocked and cleared away from danger.

The Millers found themselves 1-0 down after 9 mins. Keeper Rhys Madden called for the ball, Chris Bourne half went for the ball and half left it, meaning that he got enough connection to take it away from Madden, into the path of Sandro Costa who then had the easy chance of tapping home from six yards.

The Millers, however, were not behind long, Alex Teniola was bundled into meaning a free-kick 30 plus yards out. Midfielder George Doyle stepped up and found the top corner, in what could be their goal of the season on 18 mins.

Straight away the ‘Scholars’ responded and attacked in numbers - an effort from Sandro Costa was tipped over the bar and from that corner, the keeper was called into action again, this time denying a weighty effort from Michael Murray to keep the scores level.

Thanks to those saves on 32 mins the Millers were ahead, Alex Teniola went to compete for the ball in the air, it came off his back, landed at the feet of Lewis Gard, he had a lot to do, weaved past two players to get himself through on goal, and smashed it past the keeper to put Aveley in front for the first time in the match.

A Michael Murray free kick from the right looked destined for the goal, hit the left-hand post and perfectly land back into the keeper’s hands with Steve Brown coming in hoping to get the rebound.

HT 2-1

The difference between the first half and second half for the home side was chalk and cheese as Potters Bar dominated large parts. Two chances fell to the visitors to level within the first minute of the restart was a cause for concern. Both chances from Sandro Costa and Lee O'Leary found themselves a whisker wide of the Millers goal.

Against the run of play, the Millers were gifted a chance to have a two-goal buffer. Freddie Gard dribbled around the keeper but was taken down by Berkley Laurencin and the referee awarded a penalty. Freddie Gard picked himself up to take the spot-kick, but Berkley Laurencin made amends by diving to his left low down to make a good save.

Potters Bar had a period for 15 minutes where the goal just looked inevitable; Lee O'Leary saw his long ranger smack the underside of the bar and somehow bounce the wrong side of the line and bounced away. Rhys Madden was then forced into two good saves low down to his left.

On the 72nd minute the equaliser finally arrived for the visitors, Rhys Madden parried the shot away, but centre-half Sean Grace was on hand and unmarked to bundle over the line for the leveller.

The ‘Scholars’ made substitutions and kept going forward but neither side could snatch a winner.

Another solid all round team performance away from home which could/should have taken all three points on offer.

So the 'Scholars' continue in sixth place within reach of the teams above.
