This was one which didn't stand comparison

COMPARISONS with last season did an about face at Owen Street as Rainworth suffered a comprehensive defeat by new league leaders Coalville Town.

The Ravens were full value for their revenge victory after suffering a 5-1 home mullering in last season’s corresponding fixture.
And while the superiority of the new look Wrens over those of last term has already been well documented, the boot was well and truly on the other foot on this occasion.
Coalville, it must be said, looked a very good side indeed, and their new top placing did not seem out of place with their play, indeed Rainworth were perhaps a touch fortunate to keep the scoreline to three.
Some solid last ditch defending, and a number of saves—some of them effective if unorthodox—by keeper Joe McCormack, who could not be held responsible for any of the goals, kept the scoreline down to respectable proportions.
But the lack of two key midfielders in Callum Lloyd and Jared Holmes saw that department conceded, with the consequent lack of opportunities created for the strikers, and under pressure the defence cracked open three times, while Ravens keeper Sean Bowles had just one worthwhile save to make throughout the 90 minutes.
Rainworth, facing a fairly significant slope and playing into a stiff corner to corner breeze, rode out 10 opening minutes of fairly intense home pressure, and began to compete for the rest of the half.
Turning round at 0-0, it looked very much a case of first half job done and, with the conditions in their favour, the travelling supporters looked forward to seeing their favourites run the show after the interval.
But it was not to be for, just after the hour, they were struck by two goals in five minutes. Firstly, in the 61st minute, birthday boy Callum Woodward cut in along the right by-line before lifting a cross for the towering figure of former Alfreton striker Danny Davidson to nod in from close range.
Then, five minutes later, Ryan Robbins put away a cross from the right which skipper Mark Camm was unable to deal with effectively.
And it was pretty much game over when in the 75th minute, with Rainworth pushing forward in too great numbers in a bid to rescue something, livewire Jerome Murdock won the ball in his own half and cleared upfield to Robbins whose crisp low finish gave the exposed McCormack no chance.
The game almost began badly for Rainworth, with Lewis Dodd seeing his second minute attempt clawed by McCormack for Lee Cooksey to complete the clearance.
McCormack also made first half saves with various parts of his body to deny Murdock twice and Woodward.
Bowles did manage to divert Blair Anderson’s spearing low effort for a corner on the half hour.
And, in the closing stages of the second half, McCormack stretched to tip over Davidson’s terrific volley to prevent Coalville from adding to their lead.
It was one for Rainworth to take on the chin, and will provide something from which to bounce back against Brigg Town on Tuesday.
