In probably the hottest conditions anyone would ever want to play rugby in Sheffield 3rd XV turned on the style in the sunshine at Thorne. Showing intent to move the ball wide from the very start of the match Max Singleton, starting in the 2nd row this weekend, went over for a try after only 2 minutes of play, following good passing between backs and forwards, Brett Tharne-Loose, fly-half, added the extras, as he would continue to do all afternoon.
Allowing Thorne no respite, Henry Bradshaw-Smith, having his first game of the season at full-back, made a searing break from deep after catching the ball from the restart for a second Sheffield try after only 4 minutes of play; converted by Brett Tharne-Loose. Brett then weighed in with a try of his own after a nice break from quick off-the-top line out ball, which he duly converted. Thorne 0 Sheffield 21 after 15 minutes of play.
Sheffield then conceded a number of unnecessary penalties, which allowed Thorne to apply pressure and score a try of their own, which was also converted. However this was the last time in the match that the hosts really threatened the Sheffield line.
Johnny Shaw was back at his preferred position of outside centre and again enjoyed the space created by his centre partner Andy Logan, with Johnny going over for a try on 25 minutes. The Sheffield forwards then decided to keep the ball themselves for a while with several pick and drives, which ultimately lead to a try for debutant Tuni Masi, who had an excellent game at open-side flanker. Brett Tharne-Loose then cut through the defensive line again of good set piece ball and Max Singleton finished off what was a very long half with a try under the posts. Half-time score Thorne 2nd XV 7 – Sheffield 3rd XV 47.
The half-time team talk focused on keeping our structure and discipline in the sapping heat, which to be fair Sheffield did, albeit at a slightly slower pace than the first half as both teams began to wilt under the red hot sun. Further tries were taken by Henry Bradshaw-Smith, John Briston, Pete Walker, Johnny Logan and Dave Allanson, making the final score line Thorne 2nd XV 7 Sheffield 3rd XV 76.
Brett Tharne-Loose had a personal tally of 26 points (2 tries and 8 conversions), but special mention most go to the entire pack who worked hard all afternoon in very difficult conditions – bring on the winter!!!
