Sheffield medicals 75 – 0 Castleford
After rain the night before game day came with pleasant sunshine leading to nigh on perfect match weather. All players eventually arrived at Castleford, despite wheel based incidents, where a solid warm up prepared them for what was expected to be a rough game. A motivated Sheffield side took to the pitch looking for a strong win.
With the opening plays going as expected Sheffield threatened the try line though didn’t capitalise on the first few opportunities, but soon scored via an opportunist finish by James Flint. The rest of the first half progressed slowly with the medics scoring a further 3 tries. The best of Castleford’s few opportunities came in the first half with an interception in the centres whist the full back was committed to the attack, but the Sheffield covering defence chased him down and turned over the ball.
After the half time talk Sheffield came out with better structure and a solid defence. With the more disciplined play allowing the Medics to attack wider and exploit weakness in the Castleford defence the students managed to score 7 tries taking the total up to 11. With Castleford held in their own half for the vast majority of the 40 minutes and running into a blue wall when they carried they were denied anything in return. With several rough exchanges and after warnings from the ref the home team where handed out a yellow and a red card, the latter just before the final whistle. Despite this post-match hospitalities were pleasant and the traveling side returned home happy (and with no further reasons to call the RAC).
