Wood Collapse at Marine

By

Mariners 5 Wood 1

Supermarine romped to a 5-1 win against an out of sorts Shortwood side on Saturday but the score line didn’t tell the whole story. Swindon played excellent football throughout and to an extent Shortwood shot themselves in the foot but the may feel the footballing Gods were against them – especially in the first half.
Supermarine made the brightest of starts and Woodley and Parsons had early chances to put the Mariners in front before Shortwood, already suffering from missing players, lost Liam Meredith after only 16 minutes with a recurrence of his ankle ligament injury that will undoubtedly keep him out for the rest of the season. Pickering made a super save to turn over a close range header and Wood started to get forward more without looking particularly threatening. The game changed in the minute before half time. Burns appeared to be fouled in the box and as the ball was cleared Morris was kicked out at by a defender in clear view of the assistant. The ball went straight up the other end and White failed to clear although Wood had clear and strong grounds to feel he was fouled. With nothing given Parsons shot home to give the home side a deserved but possibly fortunate lead.

Whatever Wood’s perceived sense of injustice Marine’s second half was outstanding. Parsons ran through to shoot past Pickering after 52 minutes and missed a golden chance for his hat trick seconds later. Wood’s attacks were sporadic at best but Morris had a goal ruled out for offside before Thwaite fouled Selman as he was about to shoot and Brad Hooper fired home the penalty after 69 minutes. Hooper then scored his second with a fine strike after 73 minutes and in the 90th minute Selman tapped home from close range after a fine end to end move.

Finally deep in added time a Bobby Humphreys cross fell to Jack Freeman and the Marine defence stood off him while a cracked an excellent consolation goal into the corner.
