Haringey Hit Soham For Six

Soham’s winless run continues as they were comfortably beaten 6-0 away to Haringey Borough

although the score could have been a lot larger had it not been for the form of keeper Niall Conroy, who was called upon a number of times during the game to make important saves.

Having been denied by a late equaliser at home to Brightlingsea Regent last weekend, the Greens made two changes to the side as Pat Adamson and Dan Hobbs both started in place of Cemal Ramadan and unavailable captain Lewis McDonald, with Simon Swinton taking over the arm band.

Despite Soham having a couple of early attacks it was Haringey that opened the scoring in the fifth minute when collected Palmer’s long ball up field delivering it into the middle of the area allowing Adrian Markus an easy finish from close range. The hosts came close to doubling the lead a minute later, however following good build up play, Conroy pushed McDonald’s strike away from goal. Borough continued to have the better of the play as the half continued with McDonald and Markus having opportunities before Ralston Gabriel scored their second in the 37th minute when he found space towards the edge of the area towards the edge of the area to place wide of Conroy. Gabriel then headed straight at Conroy, before two minutes before the interval, McDonald managed to get goal side of Swinton to deliver the ball across the area only for Conroy to deny Olufemi. The ball was delivered back into the area with the keeper producing a magnificent save to tip over from Gabriel’s acrobatic effort, with Borough scoring their third of the game from the resultant corner, when it was played towards the back of the area where Anthony McDonald had plenty of time to fire in at the near post.

The second half started in the same manner with McDonald, Olufemi and Markus all having opportunities before Borough scored a fourth after an hour when Gabriel collected a long throughball to take it into the area with his shot coming back off the far post, only for the striker to collect the loose ball, take it round Conroy and roll it into an empty net for his second of the game. Five minutes later it became five as Ali Setirekli ran onto a forward ball, finding space to score from inside the area. Shortly after, McDonald played in Setirekli but this time Conroy made a near post save to deny the attacker. Soham’s chances during the game had been limited, however they thought they pulled a goal back in the 69th minute when Lewis Endacott headed home from a corner, however this was ruled out for a foul in the build-up. Shortly after, Palmer made saves from Mulready and debutant Jaydon Charles, whilst Brown fired wide. But the hosts were soon back on the attack with subs Fenton and Benjamin linking up to play in Markus, however he was denied with Conroy making a reaction save to push the ball over the bar. Markus and Gabriel had further chances, with Conroy keeping out another Gabriel shot with his feet, before Benjamin also fired straight at the keeper. As the game moved into stoppage time, Conroy tipped over Markus’ header, with the keeper also making a near post save to thwart the striker. But with the last opportunity of the game, four minutes into added on time, a corner was delivered towards the back post for the unmarked Chris Benjamin to stoop and head home Haringey’s sixth goal of the game.
