Playing their third away game of the week, Soham named the same starting eleven which had won at Romford at the weekend for the first League fixture between the two sides since gaining promotion at the end of the 2008 season.
Soham started the game on the attack playing down the slope with Roach making an early save to keep out Norman’s volley, with the play quickly switching ends where Calver firstly placed an angled shot across the face of goal before firing over after Pope had parried Kerins’ ball. As the game continued, the hosts continued to edge the play although opportunities were limited as Calver again put behind whilst Brown fired over before Soham gained the advantage scoring in the last minute of the half when Roach punched clear Carden’s left sided freekick into the area, with the ball coming back off Gary Cohen, who had come on as a substitute midway through the half for the injured Buddle, to roll over the line for his first goal for the club.
The players came out to heavy rain and within thirty-nine seconds of the restart Mildenhall levelled the score when Calver worked his way past Gardner into the area from the right, where Pope was unable to hold onto his shot with Joe Asensi following up to convert. Shortly after, Gardner curled a freekick at the keeper with Crow twice coming close either side of the hour as he firstly headed wide before placing another shot at Pope from a corner. The Greens were reduced to ten men in the 75th minute when captain Lewis Endacott was dismissed for what was adjudged to be a dangerous challenge on Chambers-Shaw near the halfway line. Five minutes later the midfielder was involved again when the hosts were awarded a penalty after the substitute was brought down towards the edge of the area despite appeals from the visitors that the foul was committed outside the area, with Asensi scoring his second of the half by squeezing his spot kick into the bottom corner, despite Pope guessing correctly. Soham threw more players forward as the game moved into stoppage time as Roach was forced to punch Russell’s long throw away from his goal line, before making a low save to touch Hobbs’ shot from distance wide of the post. Josh Pope, playing his first game against his former club having Recreation Way during the summer, came up for the corner and stayed up-field as play continued and nearly equalised with the last effort of the game with Roach making a fine save to push the keeper’s header, from another Russell throw, over the bar.
