First Team beat Locksheath Pumas 62-7

By

SRFC run in 10 tries in final home game of the year to win 62-7

In perfect conditions, with the club dinner in the evening, Southampton RFC executed their game plan almost to perfection. The forwards won the scrum battle all day, Lucas disrupted Locksheath lineout as he normally does and the backs managed to catch the vast majority of ball they got!

SRFC's big Portuguese Tuilagi (AKA Tiago Dias) provided the soundtrack for the day with his constant call of "13s miiiiiiiiine" when lining up in defence.

SRFC got on top quickly and soon realised they could give payback for the 64-14 loss on the first game of the season at Locksheath.

2 tries from flanker Josh Rihan, one from fly half Connor and scrum half Ash Saunter (in front of his proud parents - who still owe a few jugs of beer from winning the Grand National sweepstake!!!) got the bonus point for Southampton in the first half.

Captain Kenny Baughan also touched down by out pacing his opposite winger to score in the corner. 31-0 at half time was the least SRFC deserved.

The highlight of the first half though was returning, ex Captain, Steve Judd running on the pitch as a replacement.... with his sunglasses still on. After some abuse from Locksheath he managed to realise and take them off.

The only rival to this moment was when winger Robbie Ashby was running towards the corner and was lined up perfectly by the big Locksheath forward who hit him clean and hard from the side. The sound of the hit resonated around Test Park.

The second half was more of the same. Every time Southampton could get the ball away from the breakdown, they looked dangerous.

Connor added his second and Tiago got a score himself. Kenny Baughan was running circles around Locksheath, especially when catching failed penalty kicks for touch. One of these runs led to him claiming his brace for the day.

Josh got his hat trick after Tiago burst through and decided to Tongan sidestep the full back (in a similar manner to Vincent tried the week before). However this time Tiago sat the full back down but then, selflessly, offload to Josh to run under the posts.

SRFC's final try came through Danny after Ian Budd, again similarly to last week, broke through the line, drew the man and off loaded perfectly. Some would say he is wasted in the second row.

All in all, Southampton ran in 10 tries, all of them from the loose and a general fast flowing gameplan. No 8, Andy Campbell was kicking off the tee and slotted 6 conversions. However every one of these 6 successful conversions was in front of the posts and the Locksheath kicker showed him how it was done by drop goaling his attempt at the end when they did finally score.

A great game and a great day for the club.
