SOUTH STAFFORDSHIRE TOUCH SERIES; ROUND THREE – RUGELEY; 13TH JULY 2018.

By Steven McLuckie

Stafford Touch Rugby finish in third & fifth place in the third tournament of the South Staffordshire touch series … but 2nd & 3rd overall!

A fantastic sixteen regular members from Stafford Wednesday night touch rugby took the journey over to Rugeley last Friday night for the third tournament of the South Staffordshire touch series. The players were accompanied by a travelling band of supporters & an ever-prowling photographer.

For the third series in a row Stafford fielded two teams comprised of a broad cross section of players from the inexperienced through to rock steady veterans and all abilities in between. With two teams of eight the players prepared to take on nine other teams from Essington, Handsworth, Cannock, Walsall, Wheaton Aston and Penkridge.

A humid evening saw a smattering of rain showers to make the surface slightly greasy & the ball slippery. The evening opened with both Stafford sides playing against each other for a well-deserved draw followed by another four very competitive matches. The evening ended with Stafford Bees taking two wins, two draws and one loss to earn twenty-eight points and taking fifth position on the night. Two places ahead in third were Stafford Wasps with four wins and one draw earning thirty-three points. Despite another series of strong performances, the travelling county town sides slipped down the rankings by losing points for only fielding one female player each.

A huge thanks to all Wasps & Bees players who turned out to represent the club. Overall rankings, after three rounds are Stafford Wasps in second place and Stafford Bees in third.
