Daniels Make A Dent On The Steels
Stamford started the new season with a hard-fought victory at Stocksbridge Park Steels. The Daniels first win at the South Yorkshire side since 2014.
The match had everything you would want from an opening day encounter, goals a plenty, red cards and missed penalties.
Last season, Stamford prided itself on being a mean defence with only 34 goals being conceded in 42 games. This season the Daniels were behind after only 29 seconds! Tyler Williams beat Taron Hare down the Daniels right and cut the ball back for Scott Ruthven to slot home from close range. Stamford were level after three minutes when a cross from the right was cut back to Stan Mugisha who slotted home from 6 yards.
Following an eventful few minutes the game settled down with chances limited for both sides. Two efforts of note, Bradley Fortnam-Tomlinson had a shot wide of the post following a quick throw in and then captain Cleveland Taylor had shot blocked by a defender.
On the half hour mark, Taylor went in for a challenge with Tyler Williams, but the home side player went in to strong catching the Daniels midfielder above the ankle. The referee showed the steels wide man a red card. Cleveland was not able to continue so was replaced with Joe Burgess.
Stamford had a couple of more chances just before half time with Rob Morgan coming closest with a header being cleared off the line from a Jake Duffy corner.
The Daniels took the lead two minutes into the second half when Fortnam-Tomlinson unleashed a shot across the goal beating Jordan Greaves in the home goal. Morgan then had a shot wide of the goal after being played in by Mugisha
Just after the hour mark another shot by Morgan was blocked at the expense of a corner. Jake Duffy swung the resultant corner in at it was met by Jordan Cooke to score his first goal for Stamford. Four minutes later, Stamford scored their fourth when Mugisha doubled his tally for the day when Fortnam-Tomlinson played in the wide man who rounded the keeper to slot home.
Stamford then appeared to ease off and the home side had a couple of chances and with seven minutes remaining Aaron Moxam slotting home after Dan Haystead had blocked a shot. Then the Daniels were awarded a penalty. Sam Grouse was hauled down by the Stocksbridge keeper and Fortnam-Tomlinson stepped up to take the spot kick, but keeper redeemed himself by saving the kick.
The home then had another chance to pull a goal back when Moxam had a shot, but Cooke was in the right place to clear off the line.
