The Big Strathie Bike Ride 2011 / 12

Two members of Strathmore RFC, Stuart Cameron & Ian Matheson took on a challenge to cycle to all the 1st XV away fixtures for the season. The charity challenge took the crazy bikers from Hamilton RFC in the south to Orkney RFC in the north a total of 1205 miles including two gruelling overnight trips up the A9 the first on the 4th January when the cup match against Orkney was abandoned after cycling 164 miles due to a frozen pitch and the second on the 17th February for the trip to Highland RFC arriving cold and wet in Inverness at 5:15am.

The longest trip was to Thurso last September when they were joined by Raymond Moug & Peter Hargreaves who also cycled to Thurso for the match against last weekends opposition Caithness a total of 264 miles thankfully with a tail wind most of the way – one ejit also cycled back! Strathmore RFC were delighted to present a cheque for £1137 to Mr John Symington, treasurer of Lippen Care, a Hospice run out of Whitehills Hospital in Forfar.

Strathmore Hospice was opened in April 2005. Lippen Care, committed to promoting high quality palliative care throughout Angus is a locally based charity which has raised funds to build and equip the hospice and works in partnership with Angus Community Health Partnership and NHS Tayside. The Hospice forms part of the newly built Whitehills Health and Community Care Centre in Forfar, Angus.
