Brannon's Blog - SCTFC Vs Marine AFC

Suttons good form continues!

Sutton Coldfield’s Town’s revival under Neil Tooth continued on Tuesday night when they defeated fellow strugglers Marine 3-1.

In a dominant performance, which witnessed the Sutton debut of former Carlisle and Preston striker Karl Hawley, The Royals could have added more goals in one of their best performances this season.

The conditions were severely cold and snow showers came down for a sizeable chunk of the game. It was the home side who made the best start, countering impressively and working the Marine number one Martin Fearon early on.

Sutton’s dominance was then rewarded
when Danny O’Callaghan struck a beauty from distance.

The rest of the first half was generally dominated by Sutton, who added a second before half-time when Niall Flint ran halfway up the pitch to finish coolly and make it 2-0.

The second half adopted a similar pattern. The pace of Justin Richards continued to cause problems but he didn’t have one of his best finishing days.

Marine pulled one back, in the 74th minute, when Jake Mitchley scored. To their credit, Sutton didn’t panic and continued to operate on the front foot.

The win was sealed minutes later as James Beresford rose highest to head home. The win leaves Sutton bottom but only on goal difference.

Jay B’s Reflections:
• Tooth’s is operating shrewdly in the transfer market. He’s bought in serious pedigree with Karl Hawley but also added some familiar faces who understand what it means to play for him and the Ultras
• The victory drags Marine into trouble – the Merseyside club are just two points above Sutton now.
• My friend, Tom Nelson, an Aston Villa season ticket holder, made his first appearance at Coles Lane on Tuesday. He was impressed with the playing surface, bar and display. He didn’t rule out future visits!!
