TEVERSAL 3-1 BARROW TOWN

By

“Home Sweet Home For Tevie”

From the start of the season till now Teversal have played 8 home League games and managed to win 7 to make Carnarvon Street a bit of a fortress of late. Going into the game they knew it was going to be a stern test against a Barrow Town who arrived for the East Midlands Counties League Premier Division fixture in fine fettle themselves with two straight wins against Kimberley Miners Welfare and Arnold Town.

The game started of brightly with both side showing their intentions of being on the front foot, which made for an entertaining encounter. It was Teversal who was to make the early pressure tell when on 8 minutes a well taken finish by Dave Cockerill was just reward for perfectly timed run to latch onto Kurt Bamford’s well weighted through ball that draw Hilton off his line for the striker to guide his effort past the keeper and into the net. That was Dave Cockerill’s 4th goal of the week after scoring a hat trick in the midweek 3-2 win at Stapenhill.

The delight of the home camp could be seen when the lead was doubled on 13 minutes when a cross from the left from James Travis found Matt Wilkinson to calmly head home with a controlled header that left Hilton making a token effort as the ball looped into the back of the net to make it 2-0 to the host. That goal triggered a Teversal purple patch in the game with both Kurt Bamford and Danny Fletcher were both denied goals by superb defensive blocks.

Barrow soon started to get over the shock of the two quick fire goals and started to create opportunities of their own. On the half hour mark the visitors could and possible should have halved the deficit when a great cross from the right by Pearce found Chikaka who guided his headed effort back across goal but also wide of the upright. But not deterred by this disappoint, Barrow was starting to have a period of possession that tested the resolve of the home rear-guard, a test they passed with flying colours.

As expected Barrow came in the second period to continue the pressure on the home, with clear that if there was to be a third goal it would be critical on the outcome of the game. With the cushion of the two goal lead the Tevie Boys remained disciplined and workmanlike to keep the Riversiders at bay. In fact it was the host who look most like scoring on the break and in patches being patient passing move which was the source of a Kurt Bamford effort just after the hour mark, but the cultured midfielder who drilled effort across goal and wide of the mark.. Following that a dangerous well worked free kick saw James McCann with a similar effort that of his midfield partner but his effort was under hit before being cleared in the ensuing scramble.

The tide had turned with Teversal now starting to create more opportunities, but failed to turn them into goals. That was until the 89th minute when Kurt Bamford broke clear drawing Hilton off his line to roll the ball past the Keeper for the grateful Josh Radford to fire home under pressure from James Hewing to all but seal the victory.

Credit must go to Barrow for playing their part in an entertaining encounter with them rewarded a superb consolation in the third minute of added on time when Kev Davis produced a thunderous finish from 18 yards that left Josh Turton with chance as the ball smashed into the top corner to make it a final score of 3-1.

Next up for Teversal is another home game when they entertain Arnold Town on Saturday 14th October at Carnarvon Street for an East Midlands Counties League Premier Division fixture with a 3:00pm kick off.
