"Cartwright Thunderbolt Seals The Deal For Tevie"

Teversal encountered the third close battle inside of the space of seven days and after going down 1-0 to both Clipstone and Kimberley Miners Welfare, they travelled to Radford hoping to put an halt to the back to back loses. The visitors started of brightly but was rocked on four minutes by a defensive miscommunication between Greg Smith and keeper Gareth Briggs that allowed the ball to end up at the feet of Conor Moore to punish the lapse by firing home from 18 yards despite Briggs desperate efforts.

Credit to both Greg Smith and Gareth Briggs who went on to have excellent games and be the bedrock along with Jake Allen to recover from the early disappointment to take the game to Radford. Chances started to come with an inch perfect and perfectly weighted through ball by Ben Cartwright saw Danny Fletcher running in on goal but under intense pressure from Morris managed to produce an effort that needed the keeper Searson-Smithard to make an excellent block with his legs as he raced of his line to narrow the angle. That was followed by the Teversal skipper Danny O'Donnell putting in a free kick into the penalty from out on the right that saw Matt Wilkinson head on to the back stick where Declan Jenkins just failed to get that telling touch to level.

The visitor’s continued with the pressure and a long throw in from Griffiths saw Wilkinson again head it on but this time it fell under the bar which caused problems when Searson-Smithard spilled the ball as it fell under the bar fortunately for the Keeper the ball dropped just behind Fullwood who hooked an effort back at goal but couldn’t control it as it cleared the bar. On 29 minutes the Teversal pressure finally paid off when O’Donnell whipped in a corner from the right that saw Wilkinson and the Radford defender Hore going up together with the defender managing to get the slightest touch to powerfully past his stranded Keeper to level the scores at 1-1.

Two minutes later Teversal took the lead with a goal that was worth the entry money on its own. A passing move down the left flank involving James Travis, Matt Wilkinson and then Declan Jenkins who picked out Ben Cartwright with time and space to take a touch and unleash an effort from 25 yards out that flew into the top corner that Searson-Smithard did well to even attempt to save as the ball smashed into the back of the net to make it 1-2 to the visitors.
In the latter part of the first period Radford started to get an hold on the game and when Francis delivered a superb cross it looked like Moore was going to head home his second of the afternoon but Jack Griffiths managed to get up and challenge the lively wide player with the effort hitting the defender to go out for a corner. This was the start of a series of corners that threatened the Teversal goal, but solid defending and Gareth Briggs being dominant when he could dispelled the danger and saw the visitors taking the lead into the break.

Radford came out making their intentions known and the impressive Moore tried to emulate Ben Cartwright's wonder goal and wasn’t far off as the effort marginally cleared the bar. It was the Tevie Boys who was to create the next effort on the break when Ben Cartwright and Danny Fullwood combined before the latter played a precision pass into the path of Matt Wilkinson who made the extra player, but again Morris had worked back to make a timely block. This time it was Teversal who forced a couple of corners and Ben Cartwright delivered one from the left that saw Hegarty heading back at his own goal with the ball looping over Searson-Smithard before hitting the bar and then post before being scrambled clear. Teversal nearly made the game safer when Danny Fullwood powerfully headed past Searson-Smithard to smash the effort against the bar.

Radford made changes just after the hour mark with Hegarty and Francis replaced by Jackson and Dunn and they was nearly rewarded immediately when Jackson had a strong run before delivering a superb ball across the six yard box at a pace that neutralised Gareth Briggs as the keeper scurried across his goal to spread himself to make a superb save to prevent Jack Griffith’s blushes as the defenders timely interception denied Ryan Smith a goalscoring opportunity but with Gareth Briggs super save prevented what would have been an own goal equalizer.

Ryan Smith did manage to get to a Bartley cross before Briggs with the ball dropping at the feet of Hardy who snapped at the effort with the ball smashing into the wrong side of the side netting for Radford. The game took a turn for the worse on 82 minutes when the Referee produced the first of series of cards, a yellow for Matt Wilkinson who went down under a well-timed challenge by Hore, the Teversal striker appealed when going down which the official judged as simulation.

A minute later a total farcical situation developed when Lavelle won a 50/50 challenge with Gareth Spriggs who rolled round like he was seriously hurt. Moore ran over to become the aggressor and shoved Sam Lavelle in the face before going head to head, Sam Lavelle then grabbed Moore’s genitals. The Referee summoned Sam Lavelle and rightly issued a straight red card, however the Referee and his Assistant failed to deal with Moore who should also have seen red.

The numerical advantage and the addition of five extra minutes was the inspiration for Radford to put Teversal under the cosh, but the Teversal troops stood by their post to limit the efforts to a minimum on their goal. The irony was that Moore had an overhead kick that clipped the top of the bar with two minutes of the 90 left. In added on time it was Moore again who had an opportunity but he snapped at the effort that went wide of the mark.

A hard earned victory for the Tevie Boys with their first half dominance offering more than the host offered in their second half dominance was enough to earn them the victory.

Teversal have a further two away games, firstly an East Midlands Counties League Premier Division local derby against Sherwood Colliery on Tuesday 28th August 2018 with 7:45pm kick off at Debdale Park. That is followed by another local derby with a trip to Rainworth Miners Welfare in The Buildbase FA Vase First Qualifying Round on Saturday 1st September 2018 with a 3:00pm kick off at Kirklington Road.
