Trentham U16 finish season on a High
By Michael Bezus
Despite a number of injuries Trentham U16s ran out convincing winners in local derby.
Trentham u16s took the short trip to Lilleshall Road to face neighbours Newcastle RFC on Sunday morning. Suffering a number of injuries from the Staffs Schools U16 Final at the same venue on Thursday evening had left them with a slightly depleted squad but the boys remained up for the challenge.
The game started well for the visitors who took an early lead through some neat interplay down the blindside allowing No 8 Elijah Stone to crash in for the first try/

As anticipated Newcastle's big forward pack started to try and bullock their way up the park but Trentham's tackling was up to it hindering the home sides progress and forcing the mistakes. From one such knock on the boys in green again attacked down the blindside allowing Dan Simcox to take a supporting pass from the Fly half and race in at the corner for an unconverted try.
The next try came through Alfie Hughes on the back of his try in the 7 a-side competition last week. Strong running and quick ruck recycle ball allowed the prop to pick up at the back of the ruck and dive over the line.

The home side then enjoyed a bit of a purple patch putting Trentham under pressure and forcing a penalty 10m out from the defending side try line. A well worked training ground move saw the big Newcastle second row take a pop from the pivot and crash over the line for their first try which was duly converted.
The visitors were not content to see the half out though and took play back into the Newcastle half. Well worked ruck ball was quickly recycled and moved down the line allowing wing Ben Twigg to pick a line through the defence and sprint in under the posts with

The second half saw a number of Changes to the Trentham line up with Joel moving to scrum half, Ben Gibson to fly Half and
Will Devey coming on as Full Back. Jonny Babb and Will Barnet came on in the forwards.
The changes quickly bedded in and Trentham were soon camped in Newcastle's half looking for more points which came through Ben Twigg who again weaved his way through the defence to score a well earned try. The conversion drifted wide.
Newcastle started to show their frustration and tempers flared when Trentham were adjudged to have high tackled the Newcastle winger. This unsettled the visitors and allowed the home side to work its way deep in to their half. Further penalties saw Newcastle attempt another planned move using their big second row only to see him knock the ball on in the contact. The loose ball was pounced upon by the boys in Green who ran the ball out from their own try line, inter-passing the length of the pitch for Tristian de Jager to secure a wonderful score under the posts.
Joel Bezus added the extras landing his 4th conversion of the game.
From the re-start Newcastle again showed their frustration when their prop was Yellow Carded following an altercation with the Trentham Prop. From the penalty Trentham drove the ball deep in to the Newcastle half and from the ensuing line out Elijah Stone claimed his second try of the day scoring in the left hand corner. The conversion was missed.
Trentham gained their Eight try of the game through Ben Gibson who sidestepped through the now tired home defence to finish out wide. The conversion fell short. Final Score Newcastle 7 Trentham 48. Tries: Stone (2), Simcox, Hughes, Twigg (2), De Jager, Gibson. Conversion; Bezus (4)
