TringRugby 1st XV End the Season on a High

By Stephanie Yule

Sunday saw the 1st XV beat Hertford at Harpenden RFC to win the Hertfordshire RFU Presidents Cup. Jon Lambden gives us his view of the match.

Despite the torrential rain causing a number of matches to be cancelled the decision was taken for the match to go ahead, the sun even made an appearance during the second half. This was a repeat of last year’s match between the National 3 team Tring and Hertford with TringRugby reversing the previous year’s result winning 40-0 against their National 2 rivals.

TringRugby dominated the first half, scoring 4 unanswered tries, with 2 for Tom Newton and one apiece for William Mateai and Club Captain Jonny Morgan.

The stand out try in the first half was a team effort with good forward and backs inter play before the captain Jonny Morgan finished off. Hertford caused problems for TringRugby in the scrum and in some direct forward play but in foul conditions TringRugby were able to stick to their passing game backed up with forceful ball carries especially from Harry Bloomfield and Marlen Walker in the forwards and Nathan Lambden and William Mateai in the backs.

The expectation was that Hertford would come out hard in the second half but another very good team try finished off by William Mateai, his second of the match, and a penalty try awarded after a 20 meter driven maul by the forwards was pulled down just short of the line sealed the match for TringRugby. Hertford dominated possession for most of the remainder of the match but the defence held out well. With the final whistle, and the fans celebrating on the touchline, TringRugby’s captain Jonny Morgan lifted the trophy.

The win capped off a very successful season for the club who finished 7th in National 3 South East; their best ever league position. This league looks certain to be even tougher next season with Hertford, Barnes and WestcombePark all coming down from National 2.

TringRugby, after a well earned break, expect to hold open trials in July in preparation for next seasons’ challenges, all new players are welcome.
