Walsall 34 v Burntwood U16/U15's
A Great End To The Season. !
Nice to see our U15's finish their 3rd season together with a well worked win. Walsall played Burntwood today on a sunny but cool day. A big turn out for the last game for the Bandits! 24 players came with high spirits.
Walsall started with the traditional "sleep in their eyes" getting their wake up call after 5 mins of quick frantic play from both teams. Wood started the better after 5 mins working the ball well through the inside channel to score first. 0-5
The re-start saw the home team finally wake up and start playing some really good interplay between backs and forwards. after 10 mins the continuity between forwards and backs was clear for all to see, saw quick recycled ball passed on its way to Raighne Hutchinson , he then proceeded to power around the defence and score in the right corner. Tom Hale just missed the conversion. 5-5
The open play from both teams was firm but fair during the first half. Walsall managed to tackle well and jackal for a lost cause that paid off. Fast ball from the base of a ruck gave the home team extra time and space to punish Wood after 15mins. Good ball carrying from 4 players keeping the egg available saw the final pass delivered to Raighne to use power and determination sweep around Woods 12,13,14 and 15 and score near to the posts. Just missed the conversion. 10-5 Walsall
After a determined run from Oliver Topham after the re-start, he broke a couple of tackles and the third one saw him go down after a side tackle to the ribs. Oliver had to come off as he was winded but ok. Max Mason came on for him, Max was returning from injury today.
Open play saw some really good defence from both teams. There was a great team effort down the centre of the pitch from the home team, linking different styles of passes. Many hands made a great team try finished off by Tom Hale. Tom Hale got the extra 2 points. 17-5. Then there was a moment of good vision and decision making by Luke Cox who caught a kicked ball from Wood and made huge amounts of ground deep into Woods half only to put a foot in touch.
Half time 17-5 Walsall
Walsall had a proactive team talk at half time and brought on all nine subs. They worked well after the re-start and forged up field only to lose good ball from a jackal after a tackle. Wood worked it out quickly to use many willing hands to get the egg over Walsall's line. 17-10 Walsall.
After the re-start the home team seemed to find a second wind, putting pressure on Woods defence. Jackal was made with aggression and speed, pushing fast ball out of the contact area supplying Max Mason with the final ball. He had plenty to do being 25 or so metres out, the key element is he took it running and not stood still. Using his strength and balance he managed to squeeze over and score. Conversion missed. 22-10.
3 mins later Walsall gave away the next try to Wood far too easily and the players knew it. Wood had a big lad charging through the blind channel normally guarded by our pillar defence. The lads knew about it and realised their mistake. 22-17 Walsall
Walsall played really well pushing Wood back, Wood though put some good cover tackles in to make it hard for the home team. The next try was made by our Captain and finished with sublime double dummy pass creating a whole for Captain Lewis Hawkins to power through and score under the posts on the stroke of mid day. Converted by Tom Hale 29-17
A spirited Wood kept battling on and on at Walsall, making them really work for the last try of the game. The pressure from Walsall was telling though and Wood were punished with a penalty 15 metres out. The home team took it quick and released Raighne Hutchinson to score on the right hand side. 34-17
Final Score 34-17
Many thanks to Warren and his team for playing today. We wish you well for next season.
Welcome back to Ryan Potter, he came to play with Walsall as an u13's winger. He has developed into a fine player. And welcome back to Max Mason after an ankle injury.
And a big thank you to the ref Simon Bickley, always available for our home games. We hope you have enjoyed it as much as we have. Enjoy the summer Simon.
The team has finished on a high, when you all apply yourselves as a team you are hard to beat. A good 3rd season, me being me will expect more from you all next season. Keep active during the closed season.
Last but not least,
My right hand man James Topham, a great motivator to all our players. Running the touch line like a pro. Many thanks for your dedication all season.
Have a good summer, see you all at the celebration evening 17th June.
