Warrington Are Hit For 6

Warrington Town's recent inconsistent form reared its head again, when four days after an excellent 4-0 win at Bamber Bridge last Tuesday, they travelled to Yorkshire and produced their worse performance of the season, going down 6-0 at Garforth Town.

The wire actually started the game quite brightly, some neat interplay saw full back Mike Duffy shot high over the bar from the angle of the box, before midfielder Dale Wright shot narrowly wide from the edge of the penalty area.

The home side gradually got on top and winger Lawrence Hunter placed his header across the front of the Town goal before fellow midfielder Darren Kelly shot over from a promising position.

Both sides went close to scoring just before the break, firstly striker Paul Walker was denied by a combination of River Humphreys and goalkeeper Chris Oldfield, before Sam Finley saw his deflected shot saved at full length by Garforth keeper Ben Higginson. Town's best opportunity came shortly after, and fell to striker Jamie Henders, who capitalised on a mistake in the home defence to pick up a loose ball in the penalty area, before seeing his angled drive go narrowly past the upright. The home side went close to scoring soon after, when midfielder Matt Dempsey saw his lobbed shot hit the top of the cross bar and rebound behind. Henders went close once more, when his shot from his own half went wide of the target.

On the stroke of half time, the home side almost went ahead, when striker Adam Priestley shot wide when well placed in the Town penalty area. Two minutes into first half injury time, the home side took the lead, when midfielder Chris Howarth was allowed space in the area to loop a header over Oldfield and into the net.

The visitors came out in the second half, looking to get back into the game, with Finley shooting wide early on before Priestley shot over when through on goal. Eleven minutes into the half, the home side, controversially, went further ahead, a quickly taken free kick by Hunter was looped into the penalty area, and was missed by everyone in the area, finding the back of the net.

The controversy came from the fact that the referee only blew his whistle when the ball was in the air, causing the Town players to stop, expecting a recall, and despite this, the referee allowded the goal. Town sufferered a massive blow in the 66th minute, when Finley was shown a second yellow card and dismissed for dissent.

Town never recovered from this blow, and after this the game was mainly one way traffic, Hunter putting the home side further ahead when he drove home from the edge of the penalty area and two minutes later, the home side made it four, Hunter's break and square ball seeing the on rushing Priestley slotting home despite pressure from Humphries.

Warrington went close to pulling back a goal with nine minutes left, substitute Jack McGowan glancing a header wide of the upright. With seven minutes left, the home side made it five, Priestley racing through before chipping the on rushing Oldfield into the empty net.

Only a minute later, and it was six, Walker beating two challenges before slotting home beyond Oldfield. Both sides had an opportunity after this, but could not test the opponents goalkeeper.
