Waverley Amateurs in Bourne Supremacy

By

He who laughs last laughs loudest...

A poster welcoming "Waverley Amateurs" greeted the visiting eleven on their arrival at The Bourne. Andy Minshaw ("the Mincer"), Stuart Webb ("Rafa"), Russ Golding ("Raoul"), Simon Brewer ("KV"), Marcus Carmichael ("MC"), Adrian Day ("Mog"), Simon Knox ("Chewy"), Jamie Harris ("DJ Teabag"), Adam Carmichael ("AC"), Peter Brewer ("Mr B") and David Stockwell ("Stockrates") were tasked with responding to the "diss" (which Teabag confirms is the correct terminology). Waverley have close links with The Bourne, with no fewer than five players in the eleven having represented the home side at one time or another. The Bourne were marshalled by Matt Du Gay ("Doogs").

With Waverley looking to post a total in this 40 over game the visitors got off to a flying start, with eighteen on the board after just two overs thanks to the Mincer and Rafa. Waverley continued with their momentum despite the early loss of the Mincer, with Rafa and Raoul adding fifty runs for the second wicket before Raoul wandered down the wicket and played all round a straight one. At this stage the bad weather forecast for the weekend seemed to be moving in and when KV was triggered for ten, the players retired to the pavilion for a brief spell. But just as soon as they'd left, the rain eased and the two sides were back out. It wasn't long until the next wicket fell when MC was castled. Although Rafa was still at the crease and looking impregnable (even if AC was overheard to comment that the rate of scoring was somewhat "turgid"), the visitors became bogged down for a spell. But despite the slow scoring rate, Rafa and Mog didn't throw their wickets away and Rafa soon passed his second half century in as many games. By the time he was eventually caught for 78 the score was a healthy-looking 180. Mog (34*) and Chewy steered Waverley to 198-5 after their 40 overs.

After an excellent tea and with the weather still behaving itself, the visitors needed to snatch a couple of early wickets in order to put The Bourne to the sword. Grumpy quick Teabag (aka "Cardinal Chunder") and Chewy looked to do just that and Waverley didn't have to wait long, the Wookie picking up the first wicket with just eight runs on the board. The home side were still a threat with Barnett and Frost at the crease but while Chewy looked after one end, Teabag did the business and nipped both batsmen out (the first a high catch to KV, the second an inside edge onto the stumps). When Chewy picked up his second wicket The Bourne were in all sorts of trouble. AC was introduced into the attack with the youthful middle order exposed and wasted no time getting stuck in, taking three wickets for no runs in his first two overs and nabbing a fourth wicket in his next over. Any hope of a victory for the home side was extinguished with the score on 43-8 and it was left to Mr B to wrap up the victory, a looping catch to Stockrates for his first and Toase being bowled of the pads for his second and the final wicket of the innings, Stockrates having bowled a solitary over without reward. Special mention should also go to Raoul and MC for their boundless energy in the field. With a 140 run victory under their belt, the only question that remained was what to do with the poster that had greeted the players on their arrival. Naturally, the score was recorded and the poster signed by all the players.

The Man of the Match hat went to Rafa for his runs, although he also won the Pink T-Shirt for some very questionable fielding at square leg. The Supporters' Egyptian Hieroglyph Pink T-Shirt was awarded to Raoul after an anonymous source (Rachel) revealed that he had worn several jumpers when playing earlier in the week "because he was cold". Doogs was also presented with the signed poster, which was last seen being proudly displayed in the bar area. Comments from the Clio this week brings you a full panel as AC, MC, Teabag and Stockrates were all shoe-horned in. It was particularly cosy in the back of the car for Stocky and Teabag, whose innuendo about helmets would never get past the Ethics Committee...
