Eber-no Chance

By

Waverley fall short in run chase.

Despite lashings of rain during the week, the Mighty Wave travelled to Ebernoe with the game going ahead. Turning out for the visitors were James Wright (Jim Jam) Adrian Day (Mog) Andy Minshaw (Mincer) Simon Brewer (KV) Andy du Gay (Daddy Doogs) Matt du Gay (Doogs) Sam Tempest (Troy) Toby Elborough (Stokesy) Kyle Moxham (Kylo) Peter Brewer (Mr B) and Adam Carmichael (AC).

Having won the toss last week, Doogs reverted to type this time round and lost, the home side electing to bat first in this 35 over game. Looking to make early inroads for the visitors were Troy and Stokesy. It was the latter who made the breakthrough, tempting Boxall into a shot into the leg side, which was snaffled well by Jim Jam. Troy got in on the act soon after to bowl Machant, and Stokesy followed up with another wicket, Daddy Doogs holding onto the catch in the slips. The Wave looked to have the home side on the ropes, but Scaife came to the crease and started to smite the ball to all parts. Some bowling changes saw AC and Kylo come into the attack, to try and chip away to get another wicket. AC struck in his very first over, Jim Jam taking an excellent diving catch in the deep on the leg side. However, Scaife was still in the middle and racing along. He passed his 50 and was looking set, but a change of bat saw him fall to the bowling of AC, Doogs holding on to the catch at long off. With Kylo and AC bowled out, Doogs and Mr B came into the attack to try and prevent the Ebernoe tail from wagging. Mr B promptly picked up some quick wickets, with catches from Troy, Stokesy and Daddy Doogs seeing off 3 batsmen in fairly sharp time. Doogs also picked up a wicket, reverting to spin having sent done one over of seam up bowling which was despatched. Mr B wrapped up the innings by clean bowling last man Gibbs, the home side bowled out for 251, just short of their 35 overs.

After an excellent (and fairly priced) tea, Jim Jam and Mog looked to get the Waverley run chase underway. The pair started well, trying to keep things ticking over early on. But some clever fielding and accurate bowling from the home side started to strangle the run rate a little bit, and Mog was caught behind for 12 looking to push on. The Mincer joined Jim Jam in the middle, both knowing that they needed to score quickly to keep close to the required rate. Jim Jam was especially looking to kick on, and soon passed his 50. However, he was soon after back in the hutch, knocking one back to the bowler who held on for a good catch. KV strode to the centre and looked to continue the scoring which Jim had started. The Mincer was the next man out, caught looking to push on. KV was joined in the middle by Daddy Doogs, but the required run rate was starting to creep higher and higher. KV was eventually out for a jug evading 46, having played some lusty blows to try and keep the visitors in touch. When Daddy Doogs was bowled (something about wanting to watch the football) it looked like the visitors were going to fall short of their target. Troy and Doogs tried to keep things ticking along, but some sensible bowling and defensive fielding meant boundaries were hard to come by. Both batsmen tried in vain to push things on, but the home side kept things tight to secure the victory, the Wave finishing 60 runs short off their 35 overs.

A rushed post match awards ceremony (there was some football on or something) saw Jim Jam pick up the man of the match hat for his knock with the bat, Si was awarded the wAnchor hat for jug evasion, and Kylo was awarded the pink t-shirt for twice jumping out the way of the ball... off his own bowling.
